*Update 28/10/2015*
American Airlines has sent out a batch of emails offering customers two options. None of which earns miles and does not address DOT's old guidelines.

We have yet to here from DOT.

Here is a copy of the letter:

Thank you for your patience in our responding to your complaint regarding the cancellation of a reservation for travel to China which you placed on hold earlier this year.

The reservation you placed on hold was for an extremely low fare offered by American in error, and the mistaken fare was offered for only a few hours. Because the fare was offered in error, we cancelled those reservations, such as yours, that had been made but not ticketed.

In our view, given the fact that the fares American offered for China travel in those few hours were so low that it was obvious they were offered in error (a fact widely acknowledged in the social media posts which prompted many of those who reserved the fares to do so), we were justified in cancelling those reservations that were made but not ticketed, and accordingly will not honor the fare associated with your cancelled reservation. However, we will offer to you two options for reduced rate travel to China, one for business class and one for coach class. The two options are as follows:

Option A – Business Class: We offer you a $1,500 discount on any roundtrip business cabin fare to Shanghai or Beijing.
  • Reservation must be booked by AA and operated entirely by AA (including AA’s regional partners).
  • Travel may not be upgraded, by upgrade certificate, AAdvantage status, or any other means, to a higher class of service.
  • Travel will not be eligible to earn AAdvantage miles or Elite Qualifying Miles or points, and will not count as Elite Qualifying segments in the AAdvantage program.
  • Travel may be ticketed immediately and must be completed within one year of the date of this letter.
  • Travel to PEK or PVG should originate and end in the same U.S. airport(s) as in the original PNR with the same passenger(s) (or subset of passengers) traveling as were listed in the cancelled PNR.
  • Must be ticketed within six weeks of the date of this letter.

Option B – Main Cabin: We offer you the opportunity to receive a $0 fare basis main cabin fare to Shanghai or Beijing, subject to taxes and fees of approximately $450 (varies slightly by routing)..
  • Reservation must be booked by AA for any Q or O class fare to PEK or PVG, and operated entirely by AA (including AA’s regional partners).
  • This offer is subject to Q or O class inventory availability for travel outbound starting November 15, 2015.
  • Travel must be completed within one year of the date of this letter.
  • Travel to PEK or PVG should originate and end in the same U.S. airport(s) as in the original PNR with the same passenger(s) (or subset of passengers) traveling as were listed in the cancelled PNR.
  • Must be ticketed within six weeks of the date of this letter.

If you would like to accept one of these offers, please contact American Airlines at the following number to make your flight reservation.

From the Uber app fare estimates, it isn't that bad to book one. It's going to cost me around 10 USD (60 CNY) to get from the airport to the hotel (Swissotel currently booked).

Not bad considering you'll skip the crowds and the delays of public transit.

Was this ORD to PEK or DFW to PEK?

Opinion needed:

Should I sign up for the AA Platinum Challenge or should I apply these miles to Alaska Mileage Plan? I live in Seattle and usually fly AS, but Platinum AA is tempting.

Thoughts?

I came to this thread to see what was going on with the cancelled "holds." Kind of surprised that nothing has happened yet. Is there an actually deadline where the DOT has to rule, or could the silence continue indefinitely?

You can assume as much as you like, but I'll put money on you not getting. There is no way that the DOT is going to allow rules that were put in place to stop airlines scamming their customers to be turned around and used to let the customers scam the airlines, which is effectively what knowingly benefiting from a mistake fare is.

Correct, I was talking about the 77W.

That is not true, for several cities around DCA there are early morning flights (5-6AM) that allowed people to make that connection. So no overnight required.

Yes, it is an early flight, but it came out to almost exactly 5 cpm and that is MR worthy. Finally, if you are going to us a SWU you might as well spend 15-17 hours in the seat.

I'm in the Wangfujing area and plan on taking uber to the airport. Let us know if you try to get Uber from the airport to your hotel. By the time my data and vpn started working, I was already halfway through the line.

Is anyone in town that wants to do a great wall tour in the next few days? I leave the morning of the 22nd.

I love taking public transit wherever I travel and I'm doing the above, BUT I only have a carry on so much easier. Sounds like Uber is pretty reasonable though.

It's usually not so difficult to find Ubers at the airport, but you should have a precise pick-up location (e.g. departures, door 3) in mind when pulling the trigger, and call the driver immediately after the confirmation comes in.

"call the driver" - requires the ability to speak Mandarin?

Call the driver? Ah it won't work for me, because I am relying on tmobile roaming data coverage. In America, uber driver will come and pick up then confirm identity (YMMV on identify part).. In China, seems gotta call them to confirm?

If Uber won't work, then i'll just man up and go with taxi... hopefully won't be an issue to find taxi with meter, instead of flat-rate.

At airports? It's not that simple, IME (even in America).

-Arrivals is completely off limits (unless you're in a really small city).
-If you make your request when you're at baggage claim, obviously the car can't meet you there
-If you make your request at departures, door 3, you still need to confirm the level with the driver (GPS doesn't provide altitude info... and, GPS might be off anyway)
-SMS is a viable contact option, but voice is SOP
-Don't worry so much about the language barrier issue; 70% of Uber drivers speak decent English

All that having been said, of course you should take a taxi!!! It costs less money, and the procedure is idiot proof.

Curious, what about Google Voice? It's possible to make calls through wifi (VPN to bypass ofcourse). I'm slightly torn between Uber and just take a taxi. Not sure which one is cheaper or reliable.
