Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront
Hop-on-Hop Off Bus Cape town (brings you to all scenic landscapes of Cape town (incl Camps bay) w/o hassle and security concerns

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:
$120 R/T to SIN
$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

AA Op-Up

I wanted to add that AA upgraded my travel companion and I to J on JFK-CDG late last month since Y was oversold. The AA agent had my new boarding passes printed out when we presented ourselves at the gate. This was my first op up that I can remember in all my travels. It may have helped tremendously that I'm an AA EXP.

Flew JFK-AUH-JNB on the 21/10 with an overnight transit in AUH, waited in the damn security lines about an hour and took about 2 hours to get out of the airport, then waited another hour or more for the bus into town...

Had a Jet Airways 777 on the way over and managed to get an exit row seat somehow 50K with an empty seat beside me
Jet Airways A330 down to JNB

All went pretty well....

Departed SAf on 29/10... Had a Jet Airways A330 back up to AUH and then when going through security to board the Jet Airways 777 back to JFK had to go to a room for secondary screeening procedures but got through ok and asked for exit row seat at the airport while in transit and got 50K on the way back as well...

So exit rows on both the Tatl legs which made for some nice leg room though with hard arm rests couldn't get much extra width out of having empty seats next to me...

All up 6 days down in South Africa was good and for only US$287 or so hard to beat, now have to see about getting the AA miles...

Ya think? ^I can confirm based on 23 years or so of this that my only J flying internationally has come from operational upgrades from oversold Y situations handed out based on status. Though it's maybe happened 10-15 total times, sometimes on alliance partners. Faves included JFK-CDG on AF, NRT-EWR on CO, AMS-CPT on KL and RAR-AKL on NZ. Lately I've flown too many ULCCs and dropped too far down on status to be at the front of the line. But it's a good reason for keeping top-level status.

I returned from AUH for the final time on Oct 4. Today, my bonus miles were finally credited correctly to my Etihad Guest account, after first crediting at the 25% level. Here's what it took.

No amount of calling was any help. Nor was the online form. Only emails brought results, and even then it took several tries to get the formatting down correctly. In the end, once I treated the whole process more like talking to an insurance company, it was resolved about 4 business days after the last email for the base miles, and about 5 business days after that for the bonus miles (for which, btw, I needed to send an entirely new email).

If your double or triple miles are incorrectly crediting at the post-July 8th percentages, don't worry, you can actually get them to fix it. Your email will need to be bare-bones, leaving no room for confusion. I even went so far as to separate each issue out onto it's own line.

I received x bonus miles.
I should have received y bonus miles.
My total miles balance is Z.
My total miles balance should be Q.

And so forth. Also, make sure to give them not just your routing and dates, but also the eticket numbers as printed on the boarding pass. Don't assume they are the same there and back; mine weren't. For your routing, make sure you list each leg individually, with the miles you received as well as the miles you expected to receive.

Lastly, if the flight miles were an odd number, do not expect to get all the half miles you'll lose in this process back. Hopefully the lack of 4-12 (four to twelve) miles won't hurt too much.

I really wish they'd sorted this before the recent partner redemption devaluation, but at least they did it eventually.

Well it's been 30 days since I sent my BPs, eticket, blood sample, etc. to AA for the missing JFK-AUH and back legs. Still no miles. Even though their email says miles "will appear in your AAdvantage account in approximately 30 days."

Guess I'm calling AA. Again. Why so difficult. If they didn't want to give credit for those flights, then why did they change the EY earning chart to include these flights?

They gave you miles based on the 25% and not the 50% pre july 8. you could send them an email to request the changes and get twice as many.

I see, I may try that since I got nothing to lose, but I know it'll be an uphill battle and honestly probably not worth the chase
Let's see if I can tweet Etihad Gold or someone

Mine was E fare class for sure, says Expedia

2- If you booked a Breaking Deals Economy or Business Class ticket prior to 8 July 2015 (fare class E or Z), the number of Etihad Guest Miles you earn will be determined by the earning rate at the time of booking - 0.5 Etihad Guest Miles per mile flown on E (instead of 0.25), and 1.3 Etihad Guest Miles per mile flown on Z (instead of 1.15).

My points posted today... Got full mileage credit with AA (100% of miles flown).

I had an IRROPS during my return leg, and did not fly EY. Will try to send in a mileage request and see what happens.

Thanks for this. You've inspired me to not give up yet. Fired off the detailed e-mail tonight.

Also got the gold card in the mail today, BTW. Luggage tags are pretty nice. ^ It's also the highest status I currently now have with anyone. Now we just need more mistake fares.

I sent off an email yesterday morning to Etihad Gold
got a reply this morning (quite quick)
"Please bear with us while we rectify, and the adjustment will appear in your accounts shortly."

will report back and post my email when it actually led to something

Same here. Thankfully no issues or having to fight with AA or Etihad. Now time to plan the next trip!

Finally got the miles from the last 2 legs of my trip posted. 3 documentation requests, several months and phone calls later. AAdvantage agent was at a loss for why there was an issue and said Etihad must just not be processing them so he just credited me manually himself.

Might have helped that I specifically told the agent that I know this is not his fault but this has been going on for months and it is holding me up from booking an award flight and is beyond reasonable. I definitely thanked him for squaring it away.

Redonkulous....

Same, I finally got my AA miles for JFK-AUH and vv. Called this week, got a great AAgent on the phone who saw that I submitted all of the required documentation and it was past the 30 day period, so she manually posted the miles. She said that Etihad had denied my eligibility for one of the two flights and didn't respond to the second one. I said there was no reason for them to deny credit and she agreed.

So finally after 2.5 months, I finally have my miles. Yay But seriously? Getting a Russian visa was easier and faster than dealing with this... In the future, if I'm flying revenue/award and have an option, EK > EY.

Finally after multiple follow-ups found a helpful rep over the phone and miles posted immediately.

All in all I got @45,000 american miles for 3 trips. Hong-Kong, Abu Dhabi & Mumbai. It costed me $1000 in total for tickets..

Great fare and thank you Etihad & American!
