Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

I have the confirmation code it gave me...do you think that would work?

Possibly, although they seem pretty set on wanting me to forward the original email.

Departure 777-300 plane
Hopefully a short recap on our just completed ORD/AUH/ORD flights.
I had been upset because I couldn't get passport info for my wife in 3-4 days ahead of departure (Called, E-mailed no help). Checked in online and everything open and worked just fine?
Carry on was a backpack and duffel bag each(decided duffel >1 lb vs rb <7lbs). My wife had to exchanged tickets at gate and they said they needed to weigh our carry on. I got about 15 ft from counter she said ok weighed lol. Many roller bags on flight by others.
Flight was loaded 15 min. before departure time left 1+ hr. late?
Flight was ok but entertainment was mostly older movies and series from TV shows that I don't watch. Bring your own entertainment.
Food 1st meal was good, 2nd was a mystery meat sandwich that I ditched after 1 bite, 3rd was uneatable unless you liked VERY SPICEY Indian food.
FA's were the best I've seen in a long time. Very very helpful with everyone.
Upon arrival I found out why we waited 1 hr. A couple behind us in customs flew from MSP/ORD and their flight was 1 hr. late and EY held the plane until they arrived. They were told this by EY. 300+ wait because another airline late? But is was booked together.
Return 777-300 plane
Printed BP at Hotel. Went through security np. got to gate 58 and saw locked glass doors with people on other side but doors locked. Asked and told 2nd security check for US at end of hall. First guard wanted BP's reprinted but desk said no and waived us through. Security was very thorough. Then went on other side to gate 58. About 45-60 after arrival at airport.
Boarded and ready 15 prior to departure time. Pilot said we were waiting for people going through security, left 90+ minutes after scheduled time.
Meals, programs were all the same, never asked to weight our carry on. Recommend ordering special menu unless you like spicey food.
I had expected more of Etihad but waiting for that long to me was a big negative. I would not make a connection EY that was less than 2+ hrs because this seems like a normal thing. Plus it turned a 12 1/2 hr flight into 14. I had thought of using them 3-4 times a year but will look else where. Feel sorry for the FA's and GA's because they were great.

I was told the month after trip the was completed. We got back late yesterday so I expect them in May because it was late in March and by the time paper work is entered it will be April before getting into system.

Return flights reviewed (companion to post #2311)

Here's a quick review of the trip back (MNL-AUH and AUH-IAD)

Got to terminal 1 of MNL airport three hours early and there were already three long lines for economy class, and one shorter one for elites/Web, plus business and first class. Should have looked into a pre-printed boarding pass option, though I had a bag to check. Took a solid hour to get through the line for economy. The problem was too many different situations with people not having their act together on papers, visas or bags. Locals would be subject to travel tax but not the terminal fee in the case of OFWs, plus the usual overpacking problem by some. To further complicate matters, tickets bought before 2/15 like mine would have to pay the P550 (or $12.35) terminal fee in cash (though later, and they stamped the boarding pass), while those bought afterward had it included. But the main problem was locals and their paperwork being in order, and problems there jamming up the line.

OTOH, those who tried to talk their way into shorter lines were generally batted back, so there was a "fairness" in that (just a bad process).

Immigration was also a mess because of construction limiting the number of posts, and the air-con wasn't working at the gate. Terminal 1 of NAIA is one of those really nightmarish drab facilities (reminding me a bit of the old terminal at GUM). Renovations aim to make it brighter and will have some positive effect, though in richer countries they'd just tear the thing down, build something bigger and try seriously to solve the inter-terminal transfer problem.

Surprisingly the flight was only about 60% or so full, so I got an empty middle seat. It left late from Manila but made up most of the time on the way, arriving around 6:30 a.m.

I had about a five-hour gap, during which time the airport became a lot busier. Got to the pre-clearance facility around 9:30 a.m. and there was no line...the L.A. flight had left and most of the JFK people had gone through. Had filled out the paper U.S. customs form they'd handed out on the previous flight. Those with U.S. passports were sent to the machine to scan the passport, get a bad photo taken and get the receipt that may or may not have the big X on it.

Compared to customs on the U.S. side it was fairly easy (for me, at least), with no baggage claim/re-check to do and only a couple of questions (where to, how long, purpose).

OTOH, they were a bit late getting the boarding started, and the plane was nearly an hour late in leaving. At first it was late-arriving connecting passengers. Then the captain explained that some passengers had to be removed (no-flys? Didn't see any unrulies.) and they had to find those peoples' bags in the hold and offload them.

The flight was around 80-85% full. It was a very diverse bunch but reminded me a bit of Spirit flights and the bus crowd, and unfortunately there was material for a number of "etiquette" posts in TravelBuzz. Like one guy who just figured on leaving the overhead bin open. Bathrooms were pretty gross in a few hours. The flight route went over Iraq (eastern part, on a cloudy day) and then snow-peaked mountains in eastern Turkey or western Armenia that had lots of people looking out the windows. Also later the vary tip of Greenland.

Mid-flight snack was the apple-slice bag. Compared to the long flight over it had better FAs and worse pax, but everyone was glad to get out after 14.5 hours and the delay. Cleaners had quite a mess on their hands.

* * *

Overall I'd say The flying experience in back isn't quite as good as you get with most Asian airlines for transpacific flights of comparable length, but is about at the level of the U.S. ones, though with different plusses and minuses.

T1 at NAIA is a hole. I mean there really isn't a way to sugar coat it. Inter-terminal transfers take a long time to T1, and its all pre security. I lamented this when I was in Manila earlier this year. I flew through T3 (great!) with SQ on the outbound, and then T1 with UA on the 2nd outbound leg.

My flights all got changed about 15-20 minutes on the 3 legs going and 3 legs in reverse. Do I have a case to change the flights entirely?

you used to be able to.... but now Etihad only will give you the option to cancel and refund you without any charges.

Can't even change the day by plus or minus one?

I had booked the JFK-> Manila flight, but have had second thoughts. Will Etihad cancel and refund? Are there any special strategies I should use when calling in?

They did some pretty big changes to my ORD-AUH-ORD in April, changing the outbound from 8:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (new one is earlier) and the return from 9:45 a.m. to 3:40 a.m. (also earlier).

It actually helps me on positioning flights, as I'll be able to get out of ORD on the same day now and on a one-way using 2.5K Spirit miles. All of which must mean they'll try to change it again.

BTW, they waited until about 2 weeks ago to give a 6-letter confirmation code on the trip. Before then I couldn't input the FF number or order the special meal.

Renting cars in Abu Dhabi - recommend?

It's with some trepidation that I put in a reservation on rentalcars.com for a Toyota Yaris for 4 days (automatic) with Hertz with a package deal including the theft protection, third party liability, etc., but not the $9/day thing they try to sell with excess protection (which would seem to duplicate what you would get with the credit card coverage and won't stop them from putting a hold on the card). Total 4-day cost was $134, cancellable up to a day before. Renting from Hertz is a real plus.

Have driven before in Costa Rica, Canada, South Africa, Mexico (Baja), and Australia, so it's not something totally new. But a few things I've read say that Emiratis drive like maniacs with one of the highest death rates in the world. OTOH, a car would make it easier to get to places like Yas Island or even possibly al-Ain, if not further afield. Is the UAE a good country for renting a car? Comments welcome.

I too have driven in other places like Costa Rica, but after spending a week in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, there is no way in hell I'd drive there. People have absolutely no regard for others on the road. Taxis are cheap and plentiful...witnessing it all from the back of our hired cars was enough to tick me off.

Taxi's are extremely cheap, and there is no way I would drive in the cities, either!! The highways weren't too bad....but the cities.... wow.
