Strategy for EXP in remaining year

A friend of mine did this route to get EXP for next year, he was #25 in the upgrade list and did not get it. Only one person received the upgrade. Good luck.
do these clear as departure comes closer? Most are pretty sold but some have space in J cabin... just no upgrade inventory.
