A friend and I will visit Istanbul over the President's Day weekend in February, 2015. We each paid $633 roundtrip at the UA website. Itinerary: IAD-FRA-IST-MUC-IAD. We decided to avoid Toronto in the winter as a connecting point. Also wanted lifetime miles for the UA trans Atlantic segments.

Reposting my post from the good deals economy page:
This is also available with a 24 hour stopover in AMS and 12 hour stopover in Frankfurt from IAD for $587 in case you want to do more exploring. This does reduce the CPM because the fare class is K and AMS-FRA-IST is on Lufthansa though, but worth it IMO because Amsterdam is a great city. I believe this free stopover works because it's technically a 23hr 5min layover, not a stopover. It only works on some dates... keep trying.
Search IAD::AMS UA+ on the outbound to find, use hipmunk multi-city to book.

No. You must fly all segments. You can skip the last one technically but if you skip any other one, all subsequent segments will be cancelled.
