To all of you folks who are currently a bit short on the mileage required to attain another year of elite status, please keep in mind that asking any of us here whether or not we think your airline will grant you elite status even though you lack the requisite mileage is little more than a fool's errand. Nobody here can say with any certainty that this may or may not happen for you. For example, I know of someone who was was offered a challenge to keep his elite status one year when he was a bit short, but then the next year, when he was even less short, he wasn't.
Since it’s football season, here’s a good analogy: You don’t score a touchdown for having travelled all the way down the field to the one yard line. You need to punch it in.
There is nothing quite like the comfort and security that accompany knowing you have earned all of the mileage required to attain your desired elite status. On the other hand, I wouldn’t wish any of the anxiety and uncertainty that accompany hoping for a gift from the airline on anyone.
DON'T resort to the plaintive bleats of the truly helpless and hopeless.
NOW is the time to go out and get this done! Once December 15th arrives, the best fares will have been gobbled up by vacation travelers.
No, why would you be crazy? You're buying status, a tangible item with known benefits. Same as if you were to buy an iPod at the Apple Store (which you might need for this trip. )
I think you're getting a seriously fine value at this time of year for 6.8¢ per mile. Are you doing a straight turn at SIN, or did the fare require you to stay overnight?

Pretty much a straight turn. Arrive at SIN at 12am and depart at 7am. I'll get some sleep in the lounge. It's a longgggg trip and the cpi could certainly be better but like you said for this time of the year...not so bad.
Just want to make sure it's worth getting Platinum on UA. I'll be doing a lot of domestic travel next year so hoping this will help greatly with the CPU's. Some int'l also.

Sage advice from AeroWesty. To any of you sitting on the fence regarding the cost of a mileage run this time of year, I should imagine you're all well aware of the benefits of reaching that carrot at the end of your stick. If, like NWR, I were looking forward to "a lot of domestic travel next year" plus some international travel, this investment would be a no brainer.
Finances and time become a lot tighter for those who wait until the end of the year to address their mileage shortfalls. Christmas brings its own set of expenditures and sometimes even travel plans, so consider yourself fortunate if you still have both the time and money to knock off a mileage run. Complicating matters is that the likelihood of finding low fares during the last three weeks of December is almost impossible for those that don't start looking until December.
If the status and the benefits associated with elite status are truly important, monitor your current and future travels throughout the year. As with any business, anticipation and good planning go a long way towards success. If extra mileage might be needed, you'll find that being alert to great fare sales and taking advantage of them whenever they might occur can save you a lot of money as opposed to waiting until December when you may have neither the time nor the money. There are plenty of well-established tools here at Flyertalk to assist you.
Again, for those of you desiring guaranteed status next year, the time to act is NOW.

Thanks! But I have until tomorrow to cancel if I chicken out. Is it worth it? Anyone else care to chime in?
No you are not. Do it!
On the SIN turn, go down to the arrival lobby basement "YKun" coffee place and get on a coffee high with some eggs and toast before boarding for NRT. By then I'm sure you'll need it. Have fun.
Can somebody help me figure out how to do a 50k mileage run on CX in less than 2 months so I can attain Diamond???
I'm sure there are quite a number of folks who would take a stab at it, but you should post your request in a new thread so that people see it.
It would help a lot if you could include:
1) Starting point(s)
2) Budget
3) Fare classes to book (CX isn't a program widely known as some of the others)
4) Dates you're available
5) Partner airlines you're willing/able to fly
6) Anything else important to know
Programs: UA 1K, Marriott Platinum, Enterprise Exec

All good advice, but if OP is only at 50K, they should just do the run next year. Trying to jump up double your miles in the last month is silly, because it shows you're not a frequent flyer enough to be close to Diamond. Is it really worth $3,000 to do it?
Yes, I know this thread is "just do it". But there are limits to what one can call a Mileage Run. 50K is way above that.

I think CX goes on a membership year rather than a calendar year, which is why he/she asked for a run over the course of two months. I usually figure people understand what they need/want, and are just asking us to help them spend their money as most judiciously as possible.
To get to CX Diamond, you need 120K, so it sounds like he/she already has 70K.
