MR newbie flummoxed by UA MR complexity! Help!

So here's what I'm trying to do. I am short 14,680 to get to 1K. Based at IAD, can't do any MRs until the 27th. Need to be in SFO area for an event on the 29th. Need to be back in IAD area on the 31st. Am I crazy to think I can get the remaining miles in time? Is it even worth it (vs. Platinum)?

You can consider an international MR.

Let's say I did that. Assuming I got to SFO on the morning of the 27th (that's 2419 miles), what would be a good international MR out of SFO on the 27th getting me back to SFO by the 29th by noon? And how much of a hassle is customs/immigration/etc on this kind of thing?

How many threads do you intend to open?

Sorry, situation was more complex than at first I thought. Also, it looks like this post got cross-posted somehow. Apologies--sorry.

So what is it that you need? What you posted in your first request or your second request?

Perhaps state your available dates, budget, mileage requirement to start with since things have changed?

Second request (this thread) is what I need. Added complexity from fewer available dates, and more miles needed (had mis-read the mileage posted to my MP account for other travel this week...)

Looks like HNL travel from SFO is not going to get me enough...

So you need almost 15K miles departing SFO on 12/30 returning into IAD on 12/31? It's doable, but it'll cost you a boatload. You're looking at an international MR plus perhaps having to buy PQMs.

Realizing how little I actually know about flying given how often I do it...

Here's a question: is it a violation of any rules to do nesting round trips? I.e., if I book one round trip IAD-SFO at the bookends of the trip, then book a separate SFO-NRT trip in the middle? That looks to be significantly cheaper than doing IAD-SFO-NRT-SFO-IAD, but would get me the miles I need and fits in the schedule.

No restrictions against it. That's why tickets have end-on-end and sidetrip conditions allowable on them.

Exclamation

I've closed the first thread since by OP's account it is no longer relevent but it's easier for everyone to provide help if there are fewer requalification plea threads from the same poster.

If that's the case, then I can do IAD-SFO roundtrip for $907, then SFO-NRT roundtrip for $2518 (gulp) that fits in the middle but still gets me to the event in SF, thanks to time zone/date line. That's 15,086 miles for around $0.23/mi.

So, a couple of questions:

(1) is that the best I could do given the restrictions I'm facing?
(2) is this worth the incremental bump to 1K from Platinum?

Grab it. Alternatives are going to cost you given your mileage requirement and date restrictions.

1K vs. Platinum has been done in a number of threads here and in the UA forum. Basic benefits are the SWUs, higher RDMs and better upgrade availability, etc.
