Two questions:

1) When is it acceptable to call and get better seating assignments?

2) Who would I call (IB codeshare on American metal, booked through Travelocity) to get better seat assignments? I hate booking through a 3rd party, but they were the only ones who had AA metal on the dates I wanted.

There's no need to call to get better seat assignments, as there's the ability to do the following on AA.com:

Instead of going to Iberia.com and entering information there, one must go to AA.com, sign into their account, go to My Reservations, and then enter information about the flight WITHOUT the record locator (since the Ibera record locator doesn't work on AA.com). In that form, you can choose Iberia on the flight selection dropdown and enter the Iberia flight information, but the "trick" is to enter the American Airline flight number on that form, along with your name. For example, I'm flying Iberia flight 4230 which is the same as AA flight 120. The key to picking my seats is entering AA flight 120 along with my name and departure date on the reservations tab (without record locator). If you choose Iberia as the "One World Partner" on the dropdown tab on the My Reservations form, no results are found.

Hope this helped a fellow newb or two who couldn't figure out how to select seats for an upcoming AA operated Iberia flight!

Update: obviously, you need to have an AAdvantage account to do this
1. So figure out the AA coded flight number for the AA operated flight that you have bought as an IB codeshare.

2. Sign into AA.com using your AAdvantage number.

3. Go to My Reservations, and then enter your name and the information about the AA (code) flight WITHOUT completing the record locator field -- it's important to leave the record locator field blank and to use the AA code for the AA-operated flights you have purchased as an IB codeshare.

4. After your reservation gets pulled up in this way, select your seats for the AA-operated flights.

Your AA record locator will have the seat assignments maintained while the IB-generated record locator will probably continue to show the old seat assignments -- this is nothing to worry about as the AA record locator seat selection sticks.

Thanks! That wouldn't let me pick any 'premium seats', but I moved from the rear of the plane to the mini-cabin.

Yup. Just checked the itinerary that I'd managed to book, and it's now $292 more expensive because the YQ is back on.

Agreed, looks gone, I've got a flight on hold that technically should've expired about 6 hours ago; can't decide whether to take the plunge.

Anyone who booked BA metal on this IB code and is crediting to AA please let us know what miles post. I am suspecting that the charts are still incorrect for transatlantic flights.

Right on schedule -- Iberia is nothing if not predictable. Nobody who has a corporate job must work in Spain on the weekends.

I booked the IB flight being operated on BA from IAH-LHR leaving April and will post if I get 30% or 100% miles on my AA account. It's not a huge dealbreaker for me since it will be a vacation rather than a mileage run.

I am having trouble selecting seats though. IB.com does not recognize the record locator they gave me...but BA.com does. However, even with my AA FF# recorded (which should give me OW Sapphire status), I am unable to select seats on BA.com. Called BA and they said they can't do anything about it.

About to call Iberia and will update!

London for 300 bucks. I'm in Oklahoma city. Not to far from Houston. I might take it just to say I did.
