[quote=Yaatri;11492240]GIt's strange that you are a million miler and you have to ask whether you need to exchange money for a cab when you are going to another country! Why wouldn't you?

I thought, perhaps naively, that some cab drivers accepted US$. Perhaps watching too much Amazing Race!

On this fare, I can find a very good price which includes a B fare on NW from NRT to SIN and return. Can I upgrade these segments with NW miles and, if so, for what amount of miles and what bucket would I need to look up on ExpertFlyer to check for availability?

I still don't understand what happened while booking this at approx 7pm last night on DL.com site (SDF/ATL/NRT/SIN and return). I found it, priced it, had Q & B fares, withing 1/2 hour it was gone and all fares were T with an additional $1,200 price. Thinking it had been changed, I booked it on NWA.com and got original price and Q & B fares (all on Delta flights!).

About 2 hours later, DL.com had flights back, same price, Q & B fares, etc.

I'll chalk it up to a "hinky" website that defies logic.

Should I cancel the NW reservation and rebook as DL? I can't convince myself that it's a good idea (nagging fear I'm missing something) but have until midnight tonight to do so. NW rep says no need to do so....seats seem to be fine as the NW reservations provides a mirror DL reservation and both work well.

Any thoughts on why I should rebook on DL site? Any add'l points?

1) I'd let it be.

2) I've seen this before

3) I've seen nwa.com allow one thing, delta.com allow another and tr*velocity allow both "advantages". It's worth the $5 extra sometimes to take advantage of merger teething pains. Check the T and Cs on this promo before booking on tr*velocity. Works great on other flights.

And everyone thought the SWUs would be useless. I just requaled for Gold with a SEA-NRT 10 days ago after dropping Plat to Silver. Otherwise I'd be on one of these flights with all of you! And potentially sitting next to a Plat friend of mine, as the SWUs can be used on the same flight with the Plat.

If it was me, and I wasn't Plat, I'd be cozying up next to a Plat as, "Platinum Medallion Upgrades can be used by the Medallion member or by a travel companion when traveling in the same cabin as the Medallion member."

Seeing how the SWUs will be useless after this triple promo, there may be some trades to be worked out.

And if you don't know any Plats, you can always come to the DO in the signature line and meet some.

Just booked SIN via HNL, 2.5 cents per EQM, uprades all the way

Just booked DSM-MSP-HNL-NRT-SIN-NRT-HNL-PDX-MSP-DSM over 12 days in May, in M Class, $1793 ai, 69,828 EQM's, a shade over 2 1/2 cents per EQM. Layovers in HNL going (4 days) and returning (2 days) were at my choice, plus 3 days in SIN. And used 4 SWU's to upgrade everything to First and WBC, and going through HNL avoids 747s. I only fly 330's, except 757 HNL-PDX-MSP (the A330 nonstop redeye had no R inventory). Plat agent couldn't have been more helpful, tried different routings until we found SWU applicability, probably 45 minutes on the phone. I dismissed the SWU's intitially as basically useless, but now am thrilled with how this worked out. Was planning on going to HNL anyway, so this has worked out perfectly. The 46,552 base miles I will earn on this trip are arguably worth about $700 in award travel (@1.5 cents per mile), so this offsets the M class fare to not much more than I would have paid for a coach ticket to HNL, not to mention getting me to Plat again in one gulp. Thanks NWA!

The real SWU's can be used from anyfare, even K. Availability for them is much much better. As long there is a seat in C class, you can use the real SWU's. What you are talking about are PMU's which are not very easy to use as the upgrades come from a bucket with sporadic and low availability. Glad that you were abe to use them.

There are some places where you can do that. Cambodia, for example. But Singapore is not one of those. You could do that ins many communist countries too in the old days. In some places, like an Island off Malaysia, people will not take your dollars for exchange, at the normal rate, they will give you crappy rate, especially if it's on a weekend. They don;t want to lose money if the dollar went down over the weekend.

The Holiday Inn Atrium in Singapore has really good weekend rates for the days you will be in Singapore. A king non-smoking room with breakfast included is 90 SD (about $59 U.S.) This is a 4 star hotel with really good reviews on Expedia, etc. I have not personally stayed there. The rate is only available by booking directly at the Holiday Inn website.

We will be in Singapore that weekend as well on the same NW deal. We got the the absolute cheapest rate in Singapore- a Hilton stay with our points. Our friends will stay in the Holiday Inn.

The details are below:

FESTIVE ASIA WEEKEND

SPCL WEEKEND RATE. MUST CHECK IN FRI OR SAT AND STAY 2 NIGHTS RATE INCLUDESBREAKFAST AND LATE CHECK OUT TILL 4PM BASED UPON AVAILABILITY. RES REQUIRESFULL PREPAYMENT FOR THE ENTIRE STAY AT TIME OF BOOKING. PREPAYMENT WILL BE CHARGED TO THE CC BETWEEN TIME OF BOOKING AND DAY OF ARRIVAL. NONREFUNDABLE

Cellisttoo, I stayed there my first night in Singapore during a trip in Feb. 2008 ... it was perfectly acceptable. No complaints.

I was just at this hotel a few days ago. It is a little aged but a beautiful hotel. A very short walk to the river and a wonderful walk from there all the way to Singapore Flyer. I was upgrades to 2501, a nice two room suite.

Also there is a bus station, not an MRT near by. I'd suggest getting an EZ-Link that allows you get on / off all buses and trains. Simple system to use just ensure you scan the card every time you get off the bus. You do get a $S5 charge for the card and need to put in additional $S10 but it lasted for two fulls days and taking 2/3 of $S15 for $10US is a great deal.

Very close to Orchard RD and Arboretum (one short bus ride)

Chinatown was pretty close to walk, maybe 20 minutes. The taxi from / to airport was only $S30 even with the added fee for late travel, you do arrive around 1am and leave around 6am. The is also a Thai lounge you will get access since you're in BC.

The breakfast at the hotel is quite large but seems to me to be more Americanized.

What's open between 2 and 5 in the morning?

I'm doing a same day return on April 19th, getting in at 1:30 AM and flying out at 6:00 AM. Does anyone know if the hawker centers will still be open at that time? I was hoping to go do something outside of the airport during my short stay.

Thanks to the OP for pointing this out. I'm using the M fare to fly DCA-TPE via MSP-NRT (5/4-5) and return via NRT-HNL-MSP (5/11-12). Everything upgraded with the PU503s except NRT-TPE and that is waitlisted and I do have an exit row in the back. Fewer miles than SIN but I've been to SIN a few times (the first during the SARs scare for $308 RT from LAX), and thought I'd see a new place.
This will qualify me for plat for 2010 and will get at least the 100,000 mile EEP bonus.
Hmm -- maybe seek a CO status match?

Singapore's huge market is open 24 hours. My friend went their during his 5 hour turn. He said it was very doable.

Out of LAX I get a fare in M of 1672.08 USD all in !

That sounds reasonable, however the routing is

LAX-NRT 5,459 miles
NRT-SIN 3,321 miles
SIN-NRT 3,321 miles
NRT-LAX 5,459 miles

17.560 miles TOTAL x TEQM = 52.680 EQM

Routings via HNL are available for an increase of about 6.000 EQM (same fare).

So ok, M is SWU'able... is it worth it ?
