well you aren't forced to sit on the plane.
a few of the other prices ex asia are a bit over the top too -
note to self " must resist giving away all the best ones"
BKK-MUC is available from ~$2,600 in AF/KL Z, and ~$2,950 in LH D, and probably others. RTW BKK-PDX-EWR-AMS-MUC-BKK is available on NWA.com for under $3,500 (mostly C, some J segments). There are even better deals through consoldiators like thaifly.com.
How did you find the NW RTW? Trying all I can, when doing a multi city it claims not to find BKK-PDX though as a one way with the same dates it finds it.
Do you know the rules for that RTW fare?

The following is available for about $3,600 on nwa.com. I think it's not technically a RTW; rather, if you select your US "destination" wisely, you can reach BKK within the allowable MPM by going either direction. East coast cities, as well as YUL work well, but if you try to price bkk-pdx-muc-bkk, the price jumps to $6k. The rules allow unlimited stopovers, but NW doesn't seem to tolerate much backtracking in Europe (AMS and one city is ok). This is what you can find on nwa.com, and I'm sure that you can find much better deals by calling, or when going through a Thai consolodator.

So technically is it a BKK EWR and you just stay within the MPM limit? I see that you have KLM between MUC and BKK. So is this a combination of KLM and NW fare? I am not sure what the rules are on a EWR to BKK for deciding whose airline the fare is. Or is KLM and NW equivalent because of their agreements?
And what is the MPM?
I know, a lot of questions. I'll see if I can price it the same way.
jpdx, It seems it must exceed the base MPM, though not by too much. The return fares I find for NW for BKK-EWR is 3209, the next higher is 3960. Since nwa.com says the base fare is 3611, I am presuming it is due to extra miles.

The honest answer is, I don't know. I don't know what the MPM is, but you can find significant price differences when playing around with different US "destinations": BKK-PDX-EWR-MUC-BKK $3,611+ vs BKK-PDX-MUC-BKK $4,640+. I also have no idea why HIP does not kick in; it does if you try to force a stopover in NRT. EWR seems to be the cheapest "destination," but other east coast cities are close. I've been able to price this (I only care for PDX and MUC) for just under $3,500, and the price sometimes goes up to about $3,900. I don't know what causes the variance in price; you can add a stopover in hnl for "free," even though that increases mileage by ~2000. Also, BKK-EWR RT seems to be longer (20,289 mi) than BKK-PDX-EWR-MUC-BKK (19,650 mi). I don't think the KL vs NW coded flights make a difference, so the Eurpean stopovers must account for the difference (CDG, for instance, costs $4,527).
Also note that there may be better deals on other airlines (even though Gulf Air is pretty useless) for this pseudo-RTW, and much better deals from a premium-airfare cpm perspective (e.g., CO/NW's European sales).
Actually i think i helped plenty enough, why type out an itin - is it not more benefit for people to go seek the elusive "cheap" Bus class seats.
Or should we just squash every fare that exists in the "Good deal group" and then we can all pay the same price?
there are lots of these fares and you'll see i tried (and failed) to promote group discussion about RTW's built from multi segs - I failed because it was too hard for most people to work on with potentially no result.
Everyone wants it spelt out, and for me, that helps no-one learn how it all works..
I will be making changes to existing NW/KL tickets, so I am stuck booking directly with NW, but the local consolidators are almost certain to offer a better value if you don't face these constraints.

I have found out at least that the price combines a NW fare to EWR and half of a KL fare. The KL fares say they can be combined with KL/AF/NW fares, unfortunately no other carrier, otherwise I'd combine it with a DL fare.
Also I am not sure why ITA is unable to price this correctly. No matter what it splits it at the first stop and that bumps the price as the EWR BKK becomes a one way fare....

Do you know if those prices are up to date? I thought RTW prices went up significantly recently and were higher than that!
