Seems I probably stretched the definition of both "backtracking" and "SE Asia" and I also simply misread what stephem was contemplating.
But this may all be moot if this fare is not bookable. In any case, I don't think I'll waste a trip to KL on this pass through SIN to find out.
The fare rules allow(ed) backtracking between Japan & SE Asia. Assuming that SE Asia includes the subcontinent (since there is no mention of any such region elsewhere in the rules), you could conceivably start the trip westbound (i.e. KUL-BOM etc), end up with AKL-NRT and then fly NRT-(AI)-xBOM-(AI)-KUL.
However, I suspect GuyBetsy is right in estimating the difficulty of getting this ticketed.
If you have some time to kill while in SIN, why not check out a couple of agents in JB? I always find JB to be a colourful change after the sterile atmosphere of SIN and the food is certainly pretty good (and much cheaper)! In any case, I have a trip planned to KUL during late June and intend to knock on a couple of doors there.

Point being, contributing to the thread, and leaving the attacks unspoken may be a better approach. They are distastefull. Another thread was closed from off topic banter.

Well, as already suspected by many other members of Flyertalk, there was some editing to do to this thread.
Please stay on topic and refrain from further violations of the Flyertalk TOS.
As previously noted, another thread had to be closed down for the very same reasons; if this thread does continue to evolve in such way, I will not hesitate to close this one down as well to prevent another series of personal attacks here in this forum.

The good (and knowledgeable) agents are not on street level.
Remember, the agents will have to call AI or NZ themselves to find out if such a fare exists.
I'll be subtle, but as you point out, in Asia, no TA is going to issue something like this without consulting the airline, so the idea that I can totally avoid doing anything that could possibly set off alarm bells is out of the question.
I would suggest try this route first.
I was informed this weekend by a source in AsiaThere are TAs in BKK who specialize in RTW.Couple my source pointed out are very very good and have contacts with agents in airline rate desk so this tix could be issued under the radar.
Another important note: 1 or 2 segments on AI would not fly if the Tixs have to be priced by AI rate desk my source pointed out;more like 50% of the itinerary.
If you decide on KUL route at least go to an experience TA.

yyzprincess, as usual, very helpful information. Glad you're here. I've always been impressed by your input. And, completely off-topic, of your thorough knowledge of Indian food, per our Brick Road dinner several years ago.

Any suggestions / recommendations about a good TA in KL? (Guy Betsy is quite right that these folks can hardly be found on the front line counters of street-level travel shops)
nor4 talks of an Indian dinner at Brick Road - I wonder whether he means Brick Lane in London?
Finally, yyzprincess, where would you find a decent Indian meal in Melbourne? Most of the Indian restaurants I have been to in MEL seem to be run by Fijians, who know diddly squat about Indian food. There is one place on Lygon Street (I know where it is, but cannot recall the name) which serves excellent Sri Lankan curries, but I'd love to be armed with a couple of names of Indian restaurants in the city (not the far suburbs) for my next trip to MEL.

Ladies & Gentlemen, I do not know any TA in KL so please do not PM me. As for BKK TA, as there is no fare low enough for me to set foot on AI, I decline the offer from my Asian source for contact info on BKK TAs.So I do not have the info.

Just to be clear, those aren't companion fares are they? I know a lot of MH D fares have appeared to be very cheap, and then turn out to be companion fares.
Has there been a date set for MS to join *A. That would help the usefulness of these fares (for me at least).
-Brian
I flew MS once in 1987 to JFK in J. One word Horrid. I am disappointed in *A founding carriers to invite MS to join the group.
I am with SQ likes of MS et al should not be invited to join *A. By doing so *A is certainly lowering their standards.
With 2nd. Tier airlines now part of *A, the alliance now in my books is two-tier alliance.
