dvs7310- I wasnt aware that DL had flight numbers for those NW flights, are they indeed codeshared? Those would be a decent option. The CI and KE metal to SE asia is terrible (and CI across the pacific leaves a lot to be desired). All in all this could be a decent Skyteam fare if you could avoid those, I guess roughly a 2x markup for staying away from Sri Lanka! But still far cheaper than ex-SIN.
The NW flights NRT-SEA/PDX/SFO/LAX all are codeshares and carry DL flight #'s, however my suspicion is that these can only used for coach fares as I can't find a single date that doesn't have all the Business fare classes zeroed out.
At about US$1300 this one is a very affordable way to get from SE Asia to Sydney in comfort. I've done this one twice this year, now status miles anywhere by MHs own plan...
That is a pretty good fare. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for posting.
I misunderstood the post too. I thought it was a o/w. This isn't just good, it's fantastic. Now trying to figure out a way to take advantage of it. Unfortunately, most of my schedule for the rest of the year is already booked up.
Looking closer at the fare rules reprinted on ITA Software's website, I can see that travel must commence by December 31, 2007. No January 2008.
The fare rules would seem to allow departures from HAN as well, but that is several hundred dollars higher.
All Australian cities that are MH destinations get the cheap fare (from SGN):
PER $1290
MEL $1436
SYD $1484
BNE $1476
Fare rules say open jaws in Australia allowed. No HIP check, and one stopover in KUL is allowed in each direction. I can't find first class MH fares on a sample route or two; perhaps MH is flying two-class, not three-class, cabin configurations to Australia.

Reason: grammar
The fare has been re-issued upon expiration twice now, so I suspect it will be returned for Jan 2009. After finding this I looked for a similar F fare and there is not one. For whatever reason, MH sells some cheap Business fares on this route (probably to help keep that class from being empty to SYD/BNE), but they apparently dont have a problem letting F go empty! I tried on all segments to buy up to F and no luck (they wanted a total refare to F).
Some tricks to keep in mind.... for many dates they will only open D class for the overnight flights, so even day of departure I was unable to move to the day flight (which clearly went out less than full). But there was plenty of space open in D as a general matter.
From the emptiness in business class on these routes, I can only say that MH isnt likely to pull this fare and it's been posted on FT for months.
I noticed that MH flies 737's on SGN-KUL and 747's on KUL-SYD. What is the hard product like on the SYD flights? PTV's? AVOD? Pitch? Sleeping position of seats?
Curiosity getting the best of me, and I'm sure others are wondering.
Also, do you have to process the fare in VN dong, or can it be done in dollars? The fare detail on ITA shows dollar fare basis converted to a headline number in dong (eye-popping, thanks to the conversion rate).

There are dozens of threads (if not more) about these very subjects in the Other Asian forum.

Actually, no. A search for "Malaysian" in the Other Asian forum turned up barely a handful of threads, all with fairly old info, and no clarity as to what operates on the SYD route. As best I can tell, not all MH 747's have been refurbished with the lie-flat-at-an-angle seats, and there is an open question as to their width, pitch, and comfort.
I havent flown the SYD route but MH business product is pretty good. Nice airplanes and service, great lounge in KUL, food slightly below others like SQ and CX, but overall great airline, and if u can get tix at those prices.... only thing no EQMs on any other airline i know of.

I believe only the A330's have the old business configuration.
The 747 and 777 have the lie-flat seats .
They were confortable on EWR-ARN-KUL on the 777
