Actually, getting to CMB does not appear to be a problem. It's getting this trip ticketed that would be hard.

How about an American Express office in Colombo? They could ticket (they're a travel agency, after all) and hold the tix until one arrived (i've had mail sent to me this way before). Any thoughts?

Also, re stopovers: if the fare rules state "stopovers permitted", why exactly would the fare go up if one was tried?

You hit it right on. There is currently a special fare from SIN-CMB (min 2 pax) for S$400 pp + tax. No miles on this fare though, but heck, if I can get the F itineary priced out like what you mentioned, I'll do it.

the amex office is a great idea. a quick search came up with the following offices in Colombo:

Colombo
Mackinnons Travels Ltd. (R) Mackinnons Bldg, 4 Leyden Bastian Rd 1 Telephone (94)(1) 448065/329887 Hours Mon-Fri 9:00am-4.30pm Sat & All Holidays : 9:00am - 12:30pm Closed Holidays All Gazetted Holidays
American Express Travel Service 104 Dharmapala Mawatha Col.7 PO Box: 2092 Telephone (94)(1) 681220 Hours Mon-Fri 9:00am-5:00pm Sat 9:30am-12:30pm

zvezda: I'm still curious to see what OZ has to say about ticketing it in the US. anxiously waiting your post on that.

I'm not sure that stopovers would trigger the higher fare, as these fares clearly say unilimited stopovers permited. I guess we'll see.

also, zvezda, just curious as to where you initially were able to price that specific fare on OZ with the CMB-SIN-ICN-SFO routing. Although we can see the fare listed in Travelocity's fare listings, there is no info on the routing, and you certainly can't price it out there. thanks for any info.

and I think you're right about the stopover issue being a SXTI vs. SXTO difference.

Justforfun - great find! Glad I could be of help.

zvezda - I would love to stopover somewhere, anywhere in Asia. Would this be allowed anywhere?

Edited to add:

Originally posted by zvezda:
So, stopovers are allowed, but in most variants will result in a dramatically higher fare.
You say "in most variants". Are there any variants that you found (how?) that would not trigger the much higher fares?

Thanks

AFAIK, unrestricted fares always permit stopovers and are always subject to the HIP check.

Can this be ticketed down under at the Asiana office?

TICKET RESTRICTIONS

NO SALES RESTRICTION APPLY.

What does it say about ticketing? does the ticket need to be issued in Sri Lanka, or can you pick up the ticket at any OZ office??

I just went into:

1. http://www.zuji.com.au
2. Chose "More Search Options" in the Flight Express Search box
3. Entered "CMB" and to: "SFO"
4. Set 10 Sep and 17 Sep as respective Departure and return
5. Clicked on the "FIRST CLASS" check box
6. Checked "SEARCH ALL AIRLINES"

And it spat out the following:

Round-Trip not including applicable charges*

Price: USD 1794.00 - Korean Air
(couldn't find any availability though in Sep, haven't tried the others, surprisingly OZ didn't come up).

Price: USD 1862.00 - Eva Airways

Price: USD 2128.00 - Japan Airlines

Price: USD 2194.00 - Thai Airways

Price: USD 2424.00 - United Airlines
