Roughly 15 hours on the ground. SFO-CTU and back on a Dreamliner.

Example:

And of course you need a Chines Visa, unless connecting to a flight that goes outside of China.

Ah yes, of course, forgot about that. Good deal if you've got one though.

thought chengdu has 72-hour visa-free transit as well (can leave airport too), so OP's 15-hour deal counts?

(unless a 'third' country requirement is violated here?)

yeah, i see what EmailKid meant

When I checked some different dates, I saw some routings through NRT that WOULD be valid for TWOV.

Not sure what you are getting at, as ALL flights are valid for TWOV as long as the next flight flies outside of China within published departure that meets the rules for CTU.

(S)He probably meant EWR-SFO-CTU-NRT-SFO-EWR that qualifies for the TWOV.

It needs to be to third country. For example, SFO-CTU-SFO doesn't qualify for TWOV.

Simply completing the whole picture?

You: .. unless you travel to a third country.
Me: I saw some routings through NRT.

Yes, any flight connecting outside of China is valid, but I saw some pricing at the same $6xx price? I didn't see any ICN, HKG or TPE prices at the same rate..

I was merely pointing out rules of TWOV, as not many are familiar with them @:-)

I'm new to United (just status matched as 1K from AA EP). Is it correct that a GPU can't be applied because this is a G fare?

Any other way to upgrade?

That is correct!

You can always ask for a cash upgrade assuming you have no UA miles for that purpose!

cash upgrade offers (usually within OLCI window -- expect $1100+ each direction, capacity controlled to some extent) or miles + money. i believe it would be 30K miles + $600 for this itinerary (each way) but i might be wrong. it's a horrible deal.

there have been some decent W fares recently to both China and Japan. if you can get one of those for around $1000 you can apply GPU and thats the most cost effective way to go in J.
