While the 787-9 low fare may be gone, there are a handful of $76 same-day turns ex-DFW on the 777 both out- and inbound.
Sample dates: 18OCT. Also, 22OCT.
Hint: Google flights won't initially show these fares until you select a higher fare for a one-day turn, and then it wakes up and tells you that a $76 same-day turn is available.

Should've booked this when I had the chance, but had to confirm some things first. I'm hoping with any luck the price might come down from the current $162 OW to something more reasonable at some point in the future.

Only reason I'd do this would be to fly the new 787-9. Right now those flights are specifically being priced higher than the rest. There were still some O/W's at $39 last time I checked but since I don't need miles and it would require positioning it's pointless unless I'm actually on the 787.

Got the 789 booked for 10/22 DFW-LAX-DFW at $77 the day the fare was posted. Chose 9L and 10A in PE as I like window seats and want to compare bulkhead with the better footrest (I tend to avoid bulkheads normally) vs. the seat with floor storage.
With any luck my sticker upgrades will clear on one or both legs. In any event, I booked DFW-MAD back in January in J so I get to try that cabin in November.

I just booked LAX-DFW (8/29-8/30) on 777 bothways for $89. I'll sit on thsi for 24 hours and decide if I really want this EQM run.
Same day returns from LAX are $130ish.
EDIT: Twitter is blowing up with this deal (yeah, they are almost a week late). I wonder how long this will last.

On sale again, but for $111
Just an update for those that may have missed the $71 fare. . .
You can get same-day DFW-LAX turns for $111 for every TuWeSa from 22OCT through 02NOV. As noted in my OP, this low fare is only available on the 787-9 flights.
As before, departures from LAX are more costly (~$10) and require an overnight if you want the 789 both outbound and inbound.
Every flight I checked still had premium economy seats available. And, upgrades should be possible; EF shows 20+ first-class seats available for every flight I checked. YMMV.

I see same day DFW-LAW-DFW for about $155.

On Google Flights, I do see a few days between 10/25 and 11/2 for the $111 fare. Unfortunately I will be in Costa Rica during this time, so I will look for something else. Thanks for this info though, I learned a bit about how to search by just trying to find this deal, LOL.

I think the problem is the airport you searched for is Lawton, OK (LAW) and you need LAX. Found the far in a 5 second search. Hope that helps

Not that I see a need to visit Lawton ever again in my life
Still mulling over trying AA's version of Dreamliner @:-)
