What if it's a same day turn? Do I still need to go through customs or can I just hang out in the terminal and board the flight back 2 hours later? Never flown to PEK so I'm quite unfamiliar with the process.

Regardless, AA will not check you in without a visa unless you are traveling to a third country. Read this thread:

Pretty straightforward.

You will need to clear passport control which can be loads of fun depending on time of day. I have seen the lines well over an hour long.

DFW-PEK-(China Airlines or another PEK-SIN-PEK different PNR)-PEK-DFW.
I think lot of confusion is will AA allow checkin even when the layover time is spent in different country under different PNR.

They should book you in the next one out, but you well need a visa if on US passport, no exceptions. If on another passport that doesn't require visa then you're fine.

Another airline is fine, just have a printout proof of reservation. But don't try to skip out on it and do a return to the US, not worth the risk.
