I was fine, but it is a weird gun-heavy country. Not sure I'd go back as a tourist.

Thanks for posting this. Saw it last night and snapped up a weekend flight right away. El Salvador has evaded me for years, and am going to put that to rights now. Wish I'd seen it was for a little cheaper on Kayak.ie!
(Don't see why there's a new thread about this this morning?)

There's a Flyertalk thread about the safety situation in El Salvador.

I prefer the Canadian travel advisories. More detailed and up to date

Also my experience and pictures from El Salvador

Plenty to see and do in El Salvador when I was there last year. Used San Salvador as a base and hired a driver for a day thru the hotel. Saw Cerro Verde, an old abandoned resort used for watching volcano eruption, a rain forest on top of a volcano, a working coffee plantation and saw their "Crater Lake". I really enjoyed the locals, very friendly and charming people. Never saw any threats or danger. And the Salvadoran food is great!

LOL at gun-heavy.
The US has 88.8 guns per 100 people. El Salvador has 5.8.

The prevalence of guns in El Salvador is definitely "an issue" for potential visitors. You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it. The various gov't warnings also suggest that El Salvador is dangerous. My own experience was that it was OK, but we were vigilant -- and concerned. Every traveler needs to do their own research and determine their own comfort level. Personally, I'm not rushing back, but I also don't think it's crazy to visit, either. The country is otherwise quite pleasant.
