Both HND and NRT have good/easy rail links into Tokyo, though HND is a good bit closer in. Both airports have good/reasonable hotel offerings nearby.
...and of course Tokyo has hotels at all price ranges, though can be a little costly. If you have 19 hours between flights you should have plenty of time to go into town and get a good sense of the city.

Every time I add a stopover in either HNL or NRT either direction it seems to increase in price dramatically. I'm looking at late Nov/early Dec. Anyone other than WindingRoad been able to book a stopover? Sample dates would be nice. thx

Try SAN to HKG.... combinations...
16,804 MQM...$698 via SAN-MSP-NRT-HKG Outbound...via HKG-NRT-LAX-SAN return...easy to find using DL.com (+/- 3days)
(also using DLmiles/AX 70,000 for the trip).
it works...

20 hours in Tokyo is easy since it's a layover <24 hours, but you said 2 nights in HNL? I'm trying to figure out how to do that but what you posted just now looks like just 1 night (9/7) to me.

I wound up booking LAX-HND, NRT-HKG-NRT-PDX-LAX for $692 for a nice Thanksgiving MR / vacation. 4.3cpm netting me over 35k skymiles before the revenue based earnings start. Used a $400 VDB voucher, so $392 out of pocket. Love it.
