Wiki/How-To/FAQ: Start here if this is your first time visiting this thread
If you have done this trip please help improve the wiki!

Why would a DL SkyPesos member do this now that RDMs are earned on ticket cost?

Either for the MQMs, or to actually visit SIN FWIW there are posts in the thread about similar itineraries on AA.

How do I search for dates/prices?

One way is to use ITA Matrix. Click on "Advanced routing codes" and enter something along the lines of:
  • outbound: dl+ dtw nrt
  • inbound: dl+ nrt dtw

NOTE: Basic Economy (E) fares have been spotted on this route and come with heavy restrictions. If you want to exclude E fares from your search you can add f ~bc=e in the separate "extension codes" box

See post 1329 for some screenshots (which are now out of date, the routing codes and extension code have been split into two separate input boxes)

You may wish to experiment with things like dtw,atl or x or even x+. Read the advanced routing codes help for more ideas. (DL no longer flies JFK-NRT nonstop)

I found an itinerary that works for me, how do I book it?
  • you can try a multi-city booking on Kayak or Google Flights and click through to Delta (you can save some effort by omitting the implicit/forced connection through NRT for example)
  • if you are comfortable installing add-ons etc. you can use the ITA userscript (see the wiki at the top of that thread)
  • for the less technically-inclined there is also the Book with Matrix helper site (and its related FT thread)
  • call in if none of the above methods work or e.g. you want to add a stopover

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for transits (or in fact for visiting up to 90 days, subject to qualifications)
You can get your boarding passes for your Delta return flight at Transit Lounge D, which opens 3 hours before departure.

What are the best seats?

Assuming you're stuck in Y (no GUCs etc.)

Master A330-300 (A333) Best Seats Thread

Will there be wifi on the international legs?

DL now touts International Wi-Fi is available on 100% of all wide body, long-haul aircraft providing near global coverage. Given "long-haul" this may not apply to NRT-SIN.

777s should all have wifi: thread #1, thread #2; although it is still subject to coverage/availability, seems to drop out in the far northern parts of the route, and coming down the Russian coast it seemed like http was slow but working and anything else like https took forever and/or was blocked

Delta doesn't seem to sell the Gogo global day pass on their web site but you can buy it directly from Gogo. You can use the same pass on both domestic and international flights in any order as long as it is within 24 hours.

FlexPerks VISA single-flight passes can NOT be used on international flights (they do not appear as a redemption choice when you sign in to Gogo in flight)

SIN airport facilities

If you are doing a quick turn, you can remain airside the whole time. There are a number of 24-hour food outlets in the transit mall areas (center of each terminal)

Each of the 3 terminals has their Transit Hotel on Level 3. Prices are similar for all:
-Terminal 1 - Plaza Premium Lounge recently opened Aerotel. Book at: Aerotel Terminal 1
-Terminal 2 and 3 - Harilela Hospitality runs an Ambassador Transit Hotel in each Terminal, above the Orchid Garden and Movie Theater, respectively. Book at: Ambassador Transit Hotels

Note that you can actually stay in either of the 3, regardless of which Terminal you arrive in. However, when leaving the airport, you need to exit through the same Terminal as that you arrived in.

FT thread on Singapore Airport Lounges

Airport website links:
NOTE: even though the DNATA Sky View lounge lists "Delta Airlines" on the airport web page and appears on a skyteam.com lounge search, it is considered by Delta to be third-party-operated, thus if you are STE+ in Y you will not have access. People have reported gaining access on an upgrade to J but YMMV.

There is free wifi either by receiving a text message code, or by scanning your passport. Previous posts mention just giving an email address, maybe try at the info desks. There are also free Internet stations.

NOTE for U.S. and other ~110V travelers: Singapore uses 230V/50Hz. There are plenty of USB charging ports in the seating areas, and most wall adapters for electronics these days are dual voltage (look for writing on the plug like "Input: 100V-240V") but if not or if you need to plug something else in, bring plug and voltage adapters to be safe.

Things to do in SIN

In descriptions of things to see/do airside, when you see "garden" read "smoking area" especially if you won't be there during daylight, the only other main reason people go there is to smoke.

SkyTrain between terminals runs from 5am-2:30am but you can always walk between any of the terminals as well.

Returning to the US

Even if you don't have Global Entry, CBP has a Mobile Passport Control app -- see program info and app website for d/l and list of participating airports which includes ATL (but not DTW)

You will have to pick up checked bags if any, and then everyone has to go through TSA security. International connections usually have their own checkpoint but it may not have PreCheck or CLEAR. If you want to take advantage of either of these, see airport-specific info below.

Through Delta's partnership CLEAR is free for DM, $79 for other Medallions, and $99 for General Members. Click here for more info on the partnership or to sign up.

Relevant FT threads:
Returning via ATL:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Atlanta (ATL): The Definitive Thread

CLEAR is now open in ATL but only at the domestic end.

For PreCheck, if you arrive in F, when you exit the hallway from customs there is a ticket desk in front of you. Normally the belt for re-checking bags on the left, and TSA screening beyond that. For PreCheck turn instead to the right (away from the drop-off luggage belt) and exit into the arrivals area, go up the escalators, and then you use the regular F terminal security checkpoint.

(It seems like NRT-ATL usually lands in E though... anyone have info to share?)

Returning via DTW:

Minimum Connection Transfer Time at Detroit (DTW): The Definitive Thread

When you exit customs normally you are directed to the right for rescreening. For PreCheck or CLEAR exit to the left as if you are an local Detroit arriving passenger and you will see some escalators in front of you. Go up 3 sets of escalators (there is a security checkpoint after the 2nd set but it does not have PreCheck). There is also an elevator.

The configuration as of Jan 2017 was, CLEAR without PreCheck was near the top of the escalators. If you have both CLEAR and PreCheck, there is a separate CLEAR lane on the right.

Duty Free Liquids

This post from 2014 says liquor etc must be checked as they cannot pass through screening in NRT/TSA. However this may have changed since then, and duty-free purchases in a Sealed Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) might be permitted:

http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/secu...ection_ss.html

Hope you managed to get some sleep on the plane. Thanks for your post, was the flight crowded and do you have any comments in the food?

A MR to SIN is an easy turn around with an interesting and beautiful airport.

Happy Travels! Time for Flu Shots! Cheers!
I had been half hoping to get on the A380, tho it would have landed at 3, after taxi/de-boarding id bet it would have been closer to 4, and with a 5:50 departure.....so id have had ~1 hour on the ground between flights which would have killed me. The flights on the return (SIN-NRT-JFK) were all 1/3-1/2 full at best so plenty of space to stretch out and relax

I figured there MUST have been a way to walk back to T1 from T3 however given it was about 4:30AM at the time, none of the info booths were staffed and finding any guide was rather impossible.

Haven was nice, no crowds to speak of arriving at 3AM...... Shower facilities were nice and functional, tho a bit on the smaller side compared to the skyclubs. The Nap rooms were very comfortable though the beds werent that large, i fit just fine at 5'10 but id be somewhat worried about anyone over 6'. A meal was included in the rate and i opted for the chicken teriyaki, which i asked to be ready at 4, following my wake up call. It was quite good, nothign to write home about but it was much better then the airline food ive been eating all week anyway

I have free Lounge Club admits via one of my credit cards. I have to figure out which lounge I want to use before I can access the SkyLounge (after the transit desk opens at 3am or so). I arrive at 12:35am and depart at 6:55am so I don't feel getting a room at the transit hotel is necessary if I use one of these lounges. Has anyone used one of these lounges? There is a post here that talks a little about them, but not too much detail. The Rainforest is most convenient but not sure what they have really. If their shower costs more than the transit hotel shower I can always go upstairs and use theirs.

These are the lounges I can access for Lounge Club:

T1 Airport Wellness Oasis
T1 Rainforest by SATS
T2 The Green Market (6a-1a, no good for Delta)
T2 Ambassador Transit Lounge
T3 Ambassador Transit Lounge
T3 The Haven by JetQuay (Landside arrivals hall)

Thoughts? Thanks!
iamhereandthere - Just wondering how you booked First/Business class did you pay for that class as that would greatly increase cpm an SWU cannot be used for this fare code? Unless I am missing something?

I'd imagine Global Upgrade Certs were used - Diamond benefit allowing UG's on cheaper fares.

I'm doing a NYC>SIN trip in Dec (between t-giving and xmas) and have been GUC waitlisted on 3 of 4 segments. For those who have done these flights, have most ppl gotten the upgrade in the end? I'm not terribly worried, as the BE cabins are pretty empty, but still just trying to get a sense of other's success rates....

Dont wait for your upgrades to clear automatically. Keep calling. None of our flights which were waitlisted cleared without a call to check availability.

interesting, yeah, i was wondering about that. I've called a number of times already and get the "it's all documented properly, it'll clear automatically"...are you saying that you called randomly and there was OP/RP avails that cleared you ahead of whatever "automatic" upgrade that was supposed to happen?

Call and just ask them to doublecheck whether it's available. It does not always automatically clear, no matter what they say.

Smile Wait list

Have MR scheduled Oct 26-29 SFO JFK NRT SIN NRT JFK SFO and am wait listed for international parts of trip, didn't want to request for SFO JFK seg because you could get that and not get the international segment and I don't want to use it for that portion alone and that could happen. We are on short run now and are wait listed for LAX DTW but are 1 and 4 with 6 seats left so hopefully it will work out. It did! Have been confirmed for UG on 2 of 5 flights, will see how tomorrow is.

Happy Travels! Time for Flu Shots! Cheers!

Yes I used GUCs. Thankfully I booked far enough in advance and/or the right time of year that the majority of my segments cleared in advance: combining my 2 MRs, 13 of my 16 segments cleared at booking. Also to my advantage, this was all before DL forced EF to remove availability. Without EF you would literally have to call daily and hope you are getting the right answer with respect to RP/OP.

While you will clear "automatically" it's not like regular domestic upgrades. If I don't clear at 6 days for domestic travel I may clear automatically at any point prior to travel if more upgrade space opens. That upgrade happens "instantly." For cert/miles waitlisted upgrades, more than once there was RP/OP>0 yet I was still waitlisted. That means I'm on the waitlist, you decide to book & upgrade on the same flight, you get the upgrade and I'm the loser still sitting on the waitlist.

I'm not saying you won't clear...at some point there would be a system sweep and you would be upgraded...but that assumes no one else took the upgrade before the sweep happened.

Have others been waitlisted with certificates and called in to find out there was RP/OP availability open and then processed at that time? My only segment that hadn't cleared was NRT-SIN and that cleared while I was in the air JFK-NRT a couple of hours from departure.

I really miss EF.

MR successful, wife went wth me, training for Oct 26-29 run. Three seg to PHL were UG and Kim at SC desk in PHL was very very helpful in working out a SDC from PHL MSP to PHL ATL MSP which gave us another 600 MQM so got total to 6057 and cpm to 4.13 instead of 4.55 and less MQM. Tried to phone in DM desk twice and couldn't get it worked out. She got exit row seats on PHL ATL seg and same on ATL MSP seg but got immediate UG but final MSP SMF was EC and no UG, we were 13 on list.

Tried checking fares for SFO LAX to SIN via JFK but unable get any fares for those MR.

Happy Travels! Get your Flu shot! If you get any good fares, please post! Cheers!

Fares on Sep 23

Have a great weekend, leaving for KWA via HNL and MAJ tomorrow, Sep 25, on a mission trip with Canvasback and a team of ophthalmologists, dentists and nurses where we will provide eye care, cataract surgery and dental care for the people on Ebeye where the hospital is located. It is possible that I won't be able to post new prices as am not able get them without calling the DM desk and having the helpful staff give me the prices which they did for this posting. They can do it much faster than I can with my computer and they have always been patient and helpful which I appreciate very much. When I use delta.com multicity I consistently get error messages and have to call for the information. My only regret for trip to KWA is I can't do it on DL so no miles for my total so won't make my 2 million lifetime for a few more weeks. Tried pricing from SMF and it is too high $1400 or more. That is the reason no SMF fares are posted.

Best prices from LAX 25,096 MQM 3.81 cpm

LAX Dep LAX JFK NRT SIN NRT JFK LAX
$956.00 ai 25,096 MQM 3.81 cpm Oct 27-30, Nov 3-6, 10-13, 17-20, 23-26, 27-30

SFO Dep SFO JFK NRT SIN NRT JFK SFO
$1036.00 ai 25,318 MQM 4.09 cpm Oct 26-29, Nov 3-6, 10-13, 17-20

Happy Travels! Get your Flu shot, the quadrivalent vaccine is preferable, we got ours! Costco has the best price for the trivalent vaccine, it is only $15.00 but they don't have the quadrivalent vaccine. Most pharmacies have it and if you have Medicare, take your card, there is no charge! Cheers!

Today, I booked FLL-SIN round-trip, in April 2015, for $1224.13.

Complete itinerary is: FLL-DTW-LAX-NRT-SIN, return SIN-NRT-JFK-FLL, for 23,018 MQMs. I am guaranteed another year of Diamond status (with rollover MQMs from 2014).

Congratulations! I was wondering if it would still be worthwhile to be DM after next year, any thoughts? Still expect to do quite a bit of flying next year and DM is always better than PM. The miles will be better this year though than next year for RDM unless you are doing a j fare.

I care about status much more than accumulating miles. I have too many miles to use as it is! But status pays off in lots of little ways on every flight. I like the GUCs, quick pickup when I call, the ability to cancel award tickets without penalty, the high probability of being upgraded and free SDC (limited, of course). I already get the SkyClubs due to having an AMEX Reserve card.
