I'm having the same issue when using routing code "LAX" making it kind of a pain to search...
I don't think it allows LAX as a routing city, because when I search it as a multiple destination it won't price correctly. I THINK the only reason it prices that way on the specific 443 flight is because it's a single flight #, which UA will screw you on the miles unless you SDC in LA to another DEN flight.

If you look at usuario's post the flights are broken into JFK-LAX (G) and LAX-DEN (Y). This might negate the direct flight doldrums.

But there is G available on LAX-DEN now so when you search OW JFK-DEN the only $111 option is the same flight #. If you price it as a multiple destination the $111 doesn't show up.
Can go through IAH for 2278 miles each way (DEN-IAH-LGA) ~5cpm, but I'm not finding a good way to search the LAX flights originating in DEN at least...
united will honor the G/Y combination of segments if you don't call and ask questions. i know from previous experiences recently and in the past. if you call and ask, they'll rebook you into G/G and you'll lose out.

a friend of mine booked something similar on UA. When he checked in, it turned out into a major nightmare for him. Got rerouted, etc.
Just because you might be able to book a certain routing means that the airlines will actually let you fly it.
This is one of this things that will blow up in your face.
