As for the deal, not too bad, Shanghai is nice in Sept/Oct.
Come apply at LA next time ;-) They even have a 24-month multi-entry box on the visa application form. However, it is only good for people who were born in China.

But hotter than Hell in July/August, some of the most stagnant-hot air I have experienced in all of my 45 countries.

No, it should be $140 since US increased the visa fee. It's reciprocal as what US charges for.

Ua: LAX-PVG $694ai

At 5.38 cpm this should be in the good economy class deals thread - even without visa fees it is no way an MR.

Thanks 909 for highlighting this fare. Have now got a long weekend planned this autumn and confirmed VIP to business. Ignore the inane meta talk.

US increased the visa fee to $160 as of 4/13, so expect Chinese visa fee to increase accordingly soon.

How long does the $160 buy? Still a 12-month multi-entry visa or longer?

odd pricing model

I tried the LAX->PVG reservation and did see the $694 pricing. My problem is that I live close to SFO, which somehow makes all flights expensive this time.

The especially odd one is a $701 RT LAX->PVG that stop by SFO:

UA239 LAX->SFO
UA857 SFO->PVG

because if I try to book it from SFO, I get the same flight as the 2nd leg, but the price is $1019. In other words, my flight is a strict subset of the flights from LAX, but mine is 47% more expensive.

Is there anything I can do? I know on the inbound flight I can just get out at SFO and forget about the flight to LAX, but what about outbound? I don't think I can *start* the trip from SFO on that cheaper ticket --- I think I have to start from LAX.

Thanks

Welcome to FT, milelover888!

Unfortunately, it is a common practice. Market decides pricing, not necessarily distance.

12-month multiple entries if you were not born in the greater China regions (mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwai, Macau).

I heard that 2 governments were working out a 5-year scheme, but nothing is materialized yet. Maybe you need to write to your congress person.

I hope you have friends or family in LA where you can stay for free.

My last couple of trips involved LAX instead of SFO because of this. On one of the trips, I checked no bags and went LAX-SFO-Asia and then did Asia-SFO-LAX but jumped off at SFO since I had no checked luggage. Getting to LAX to start this trip required a one-way ticket during the $69 sale a month ago. SFO-LAX RT fares are very expensive right now, so this is not easy to pull off.

When there were two or more people on the trip, it was better to just drive from SFO to LAX and back while staying at family in SoCal.

There is also a 24 month business visa, which isn't especially hard to get (I know because I have one).

NY consulate policy changed this year with the new paperwork and now issues 12 month multiple for your first visa.

You can only apply at the consulate for your residence.

Yes, after one have two previous F-business Visa in record. 2 years ago when I apply, it was rejected by SFO. Had to resubmit application to Washington DC. Not sure if this is still the case, but they were the only one can process 2 years visa then.

DC is my favorite, but LA and Houston are also good.
