Several companies online will issue you a pre-approval letter for a visa for 19 USD, with a 25 USD stamping fee when they glue it into your passport in SGN or HAN.

There are transit signs in SGN, that presumably would not need a visa.

However, UA's flight arrives at 2210. Your regional options that late are limited. The Park Royal hotel is nearby, the visa process is easy, and your options will be better the next day.

SGN (Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon) is in the tropics. It is now very warm in the 80's and 90's.

Just as an FYI, it is still the same price (~$950) from some east coast cities (such as PIT). Not as much of a bargain, and definitely not a MR, but still outstanding for the route.

As a completely OT side note for those with children: For both this fare and the BKK one, one consequence of UA making the YQ hidden within the fare is that the child fares (for those <12) are a terrific bargain again. You can knock ~$200 off of these fares for children for departures from the eastern US.

"I"... was hoping to book this route.

FYI - Vietnam is nice in winter - was there in March last year and very pleasant. Saigon was much cooler than Bangkok.

At least from the East Coast, this booked into W - fully upgradeable using SWUs, not (currently) upgradeable using miles.

I am still only finding $900+ flights, at this time. The $900+ flights book into W, but I have been looking for the $680 price. I am hoping that someone will tell me I am wrong and the fare is still available!
