If purchasing from US doesn't this make the UA fare classes irrelevant?

No. You can still upgrade a codeshare as long as the metal is UA.
The upgrade can only be requested on day of departure though, so it's a bit of a crapshoot.

I thought that UA K fares are not upgradeable.

They are not, using miles or SWUs.

anyone know? if not it should count for US's race to preferred promotion, no?--if thats something you're interested in.
Out of NYC: $700 (not great, not awful) US flight operated by ANA--I don't think that counts for US's race to preferred.

What's better if you'll be stuck in Y? UA or ANA (assume E- for UA)?
I don't think this will count for either of the UA or US promos because of the codeshares.
let's see if the routing can be stretched...

ANA is better, but if you want to credit miles to UA MP, you may not earn 100% of actual miles, hence bad for a MR.

It won't (qualify for US's race promo). Race to preferred is only US Airways, US Airways Express & US Airways Shuttle.

Doesn't matter whatever it is coded, it is the metal determine how many percetage of miles you are going to earn if one if going to credit to MP.
In general most NH metal in Y earn 70% for MP. I have times did UA codeshare on NH metal, sometimes earn 100% (yes even on a cheap UA T class), sometimes earn 70%.
That's why most UA flyers that have status avoid flying NH in Y despite NH service and food are way better than UA. As we lost out 100% bonus (1P/1K) + only earn 70% of actual miles, that is quite a bit of miles we lost if one do a rt from US to Asia.
