inexpensive car rental at DTW?

I'm looking for a one day (midweek) car rental out of DTW. Looking for early April. Prices are close to $100 a day. Sheesh! Does anyone have any tips for getting any lower rates? Unfortunately, I need to rent from DTW (as opposed to a "city location" and I do NOT care what size car, I'd take a scooter at this point, as long as it was heated. Thanks for any info!

Not sure why prices are so high for that time. DTW only has the big agencies, not the cheapo ones like Advantage or Payless. You might try bidding on Priceline to get something cheaper. You may be looking a little early, and Hotwire may offer a better price closer to the day you need. Prices could go up too, so if you find something now book it and you can cancel later if something better comes along.

Two thoughts --

Entertainment pubs has discounted rates that are worth looking (e.g. class upgrades, free days) -- you have to buy their book of course --- and

National sometimes has specials to go.

If you're a Costco member try booking through them. Also, there's a couple of car rental threads in TravelBuzz that have some discount codes that might work.

Do keep checking prices. Rates sometimes go down closer to your date of travel.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) conference is April 8-10 in downtown Detroit. That may have something to do with driving up demand.
