Michigan - Upper Peninsula

Can anyone recommend something to do in Michigan UP, with the government/national park shut down? I am going next weekend, staying in Munising. Thank you!

Hopefully the gov't will be open by next weekend!

It's been years since I've been to the UP, but this might help.

Cheers.

A couple of waterfalls somewhat close:

Bond falls: http://www.westernup.com/bondfalls/map.html
Tahquamenon falls: http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandt...=428&type=SPRK

While Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park may be closed, you should check to see if private boat charters are still going out on Lake Superior to view the park from the lake (supposed to be spectacular and is on my list to do soon). this is just one vendor & it looks like they may be open through mid Oct: www.picturedrocks.com/fares-schedule

Of course dine on a pastie/pasty while in the UP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasty simple ingredients but rib sticking good food !

Thanks for all the info guys. With the government shut down, national parks are down, but state parks remain open?

Yes --- but there is a fee to get in.

Whitefish Lighthouse is a must see, Soo Locks visitor center is probably closed, but there's a ride you can take through the locks --- though it's getting late in the season for that type of thing.

US2 is well worth the drive as is Quincy Mine and Fayette State Park

Yes, feds & states are dif

sweetwillie makes a good point re: the private boat tours.

BTW - Tahquamenon falls are lovely. Used to go camping in that area as a child.

My guess is the 'colors' might be good right now in the UP too.

Cheers.

I'm curious, what did you end up doing?

I was up north from Oct 10-13 & the weather was amazing for Oct (low 70s & sunny), leaves were near their peak colors.

I'm heading up again this weekend, have work to finish, weather is supposed to be in the mid 40s but at least the Orionids meteor showers are peaking this weekend so hoping for clear skies.^

There hve also been reports of some very impressive northern lights displays recently. One more reason to hope for clear skies!

Drove up Friday and returned Sunday in that same weekend. Stopped at St. Ignace on the way there, and Mackinac on the way back. The weather was good for most of Friday and Saturday but drizzled on Sunday. Government was shut down so the national park was closed, but that did not stop anyone from moving the cones and going in. All in all a great trip ^

Obviously seasonal, but the cherry festival in Traverse City (upper lower penninsula) is great. Mackinac Island has a nice flavor to it. Someone already mentioned the Soo locks and the lighthouse. National park implications, but Isle Royale is supposed to be really nice. and of course so are the sand dunes lakeshores.
