Which area is best to stay in Dubai

Hi

Has anybody taken a taxi from Dubai airport to hotel without pre-booking? If so, what was the cost and was it straightforward?

Prebooking is basically unknown there, and completely unnecessary. Simply follow the crowd out of arrivals and there will be a vast sea of taxi's waiting for business in orderly lines.

As always, cost depends on distance. There is a 25 AED airport flagfall initially.

Have you done any research yourself? There is plenty of information in the Middle East forum (where you have posted before) such as: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/middl...i-airport.html

Perhaps you could also return to your previous threads to answer some of the questions, and ask further questions in the appropriate thread you've already started:

It's a fairly well organized - just follow the crowd/signs.

If you've not been to Dubai before there are 2 things worth noting:
1 - Ladies Only taxi's - these have pink instead of red paint on the roof and are in a separate lane. I'm not convinced it's for ladies only but don't feel the need to find out.
2 - Premium taxi's. I believe these are also government run but there's usually a guy or 2 marshaling tourists at the taxi rank. Lately the Marshalls have been a bit more keen/assertive about pointing you to premium taxis; it's usually a Volvo/BMW. If you want to take a normal taxi, ignore this guy and just walk over to the nearest taxi.

Taxi's are safe/regulated and unless you really want a premium ride (nothing wrong with that) there is no reason not to take one. I get a bit peeved at the Marshall's trying to make it look like the premium cars are the the only available option.

FYI: Jumeriah Beach is roughly 100 AED if it helps. Most other popular hotel locations will be nearer and cost less

For those who might know: How much luggage can fit in a regular taxi? My wife and I will have at least three suitcases plus two rollaboards. Will we be required to use a extra-cost option?

Thanks.

Why is it so challenging to include details? A taxi to a hotel near the airport won't cost nearly as much as one to the Marina district. Do yourself a favour!

Yes. I never pre-booked a taxi in Dubai, since it's fairly easy to get one at malls, hotels, etc...

Dubai Airport to Jumeirah The Palm/Dubai Marina is around 120 AED. From the airport, it's a little more expensive due to a 25 AED surcharge. I don't think most hotels are going to be much further away than that.

Personally I think 110 to 120 AED (~30 USD) is a pretty fair price for a 25 mile ride. If that's too rich for you, you can always take the metro for the longer chunk of your journey and then switch to a taxi for the last part.

I can confirm that the people, staffing the taxi stands at the airport and at some malls, have more frequently tried to orient me to a limousines. Some drivers actually told me that they are "cab drivers". Telling them that you want a real taxi will do the trick though. (Compared to other countries, they aren't as persistent. In Egypt, a taxi once creeped alongside the sidewalk I was walking on for 4 miles or so. That fellow was eager to get customers )

I enjoyed taking the taxi. They take the shortest/quickest route. The cars are clean. They know enough English to communicate with you (that's not given in certain countries). They accept any ride (I've noticed some drivers being really annoyed by my request to drive us from the hotel to the nearest Dubai metro station).

How do you know that's where she's going?

I'm not. I'm only quoting what I paid just a week ago and Dubai Airport -> Dubai Marina/Jumeirah the Palm is one of the longer Airport-hotel journeys (since only very few book hotels in the most southern region of Dubai). It was just an example to give an idea...

Since no area was specified, I quoted the longest ride (25 miles), I ever took so far from Dubai airport. Since most hotels are located within that 25 miles radius, she'll know that, she won't be looking at more than 120/130 AED. That is unless she picks a hotel in the very south (around Palm Jebel Ali) and plans on driving into the desert.

I know you're trying to help, but what help is that? I'm flying into LAX next week. How much is the cab to my hotel?
