Long layover at IAD while connecting from HNL to CPH

Long layover at IAD while connecting from HNL to CPH
Hi!
My wife and I are arriving at IAD on a United flight from HNL at ~7am and our SAS flight (on the same ticket) to CPH leaves ~10 hours later.
So we were wondering if
a) our bags can/will be checked through to CPH despite the layover being 10 hours?
b) if they are checked through, can we nevertheless leave the airport and visit Washington (hopefully already having a boarding pass for the SAS flight and just having to go though security again when returning)?
c) If the bags are not checked through, can we check them in even 10 hours prior to the SAS flight leaving?
