Now Arriving at Pittsburgh International: Fracking

The skies above Pittsburg International Airport have grown more quiet. Flight volume has been decreasing for the last decade at the financially-struggling airport, so officials are looking down at the ground below the airports runways and the natural gas that is buried there as the source of a potential turn around.

The first well to tap the gas stuck below the airport will be drilled this month. "After... fracking begins in earnest and the natural gas royalties kick in, the airport will receive about $20 million a year."

Pittsburg wouldn't be the first airport with an oil or gas drilling station set up on its ground (DFW and DEN both have them), but Pittsburg would rely on the revenue more heavily than other airports.

Well, goodness knows there's vast tracts of PIT they're not doing much with.
