Any tips for passenger pickup at Newark?

Any tips for passenger pickup at Newark?
Am driving from MA to NJ for family get-together and will pick up relatives at EWR at noon tomorrow arr on AA (terminal A I think). I never drove to EWR before and don't know NJ and have read many posts complaining about EWR including passenger pickup. Any tips would be appreciated.
Should I pick up at departures instead?
Should I wait in he IKEA lot for a phone call and then pick up? Or someplace else off-airport - or on-airport? Or should I try circling the airport instead?
