I have been trying to get to Puerto Vallarta from EWR and there are no cheap fares. None out of New York or Philly either. I have two seats reserved on CO but they cost close to $1,000 for both. We need to fly on June 8 or 9 and return on the 15th of June. Before I purchase them, midnight tonight is the deadline, is there anyway to get to PVR for less than this outrageous fare?
Also any tips on Puerto Vallarata for restaurants, tours, and clubs? We will be staying at the Mayan Palace. Does anyone know about this place? Do they have an all inclusive offering?
Doesn't help one bit the fares are still $500 each rt. I just needed to vent. Thanks

To OP: Flyertalk is a great forum, but not the end-all for everything there is to know. When I need information on a specific property, I supplement by searching tripadvisor.com.

I thought someone may have been to the property that's all. I know about trip advisor. Thanks anyway.

If you can find a cheap flight to GDL, there is a party bus that goes from GDL to PVR for around $50 roundtrip in around 3 hours one way.
Another option is looking for EWR - ORD and then connecting to Aero Mexico or Mexicana into PVR.
Thanks for both of these tips. I tried all the combinations you suggested and they all come out more than CO. I paid for the etickets last night and it is all done now. I look forward to my first trip to Puerto Vallarta. Thanks again, Marylyn
$500/ticket to PVR is about average. It's a vacation destination, not a high frequency route like JFK-LAX where the airlines may have extra capacity they can afford to discount.
Mayan Palace is a nice place, it's in Nuevo Vallarta. It's about a 30 minute drive from downtown Puerto Vallarta, but there are a few restaurants in the Nuevo Vallarta resort (Fajita Republic, La Portena, La Laguna, and Bernardo's). There's a mall (with still more restaurants) & grocery store in Paradise Plaza which is adjacent to the Paradise Village resort. Further, there are several great restaurants in Bucerias, a smaller town north of Nuevo Vallarta: Mark's, Sandrina's, Mezza Giorno, Dugarel, Karen's Place, and Famar are a few.
Do a search of this forum, as a part-time PV resident, I have posted lots of PV advice over the years.

The Mayan Palace we are going to is in PV. I know the other one is in Nuevo Vallarta but this is another one. Thanks for the advice though. I will keep reading.

The Mayan Palace is located at the Marina. There are lots of opportunities for food there- up scale and short order- which ever you would like- especially good for Breakfast is a place called Mr.Creames. It is only open for breakfast- Plus there is good bus service from there to downtown.
If you have a kitchen in your unit - There is a new large convenience store across the street or Walmart is a short bus ride- or long walk- for snacks or if you want to cook- we normally have breakfast stuff, fresh fruit, snack items- drinks, enough if we do not feel like getting dressed for dinner-
My only advice- opt out of thier timeshare presentation- they will offer you a 10% discount card for going - and maybe - other things like a bottle of booze- unless you have lots of money- and want to buy an overpriced timeshare- and want to be insulted when you say no- up to 10 times- our opinion was, 10% was not worth the 4 hours- it took to say no- ( and it is not 90 minutes) and would never stay there again. The rooms are ok- nothing outstanding- clean- but the pools are nice, the service folks are very good.
Hope you have a wonderful time- Puerto Vallarta is one of our favorite spots in Mexico. Ruth
Yeah, the time share speeches are annoying. If you want to book any tours that don't require sitting through one of thsoe things, look to Vallarta Adventure (I believe they have a website).
High taxes, fees and surcharges for flights to/from Mexico also contribute to the high cost of air tickets. And there is a high demand for leisure, business and family travel between the USA and Mexico. Hence you end up paying a relatively high cents per mile rate for flights.
