Hurricane Newton (6 Sep 2016) - Cabo San Lucas & Area
Hurricane Newton made landfall in the vicinity of the capes Tuesday, September 6, 2026 as a Category 1 hurricane (winds over 90 MPH / 150 kph). Damage this year included two attributable deaths and considerable minor damage. This is a major difference from 2014 when Hurricane Odile (Category 3) caused major damage and required evacuation, airports restrictions and resorts closure. Resorts appear to be operating as scheduled, with no reported closures or major issues.
Flights were cancelled, power failures were experienced, temporary street closures occurred from debris mostly. Mexico's coastal areas from Michoacan to Sonora were affected, and high winds, rain with flash flooding occurred from the Michiacan coast to Loreto up the peninsula and across to Guymas, San Carlos and Kino Bay. Arizona and New Mecico have issued rain alerts with flash flood warnings.
Hurricane Newton shattered windows, downed trees and knocked out power in parts of the twin resorts of Los Cabos on Tuesday, but residents were spared the kind of extensive damage seen two years ago when they were walloped by a stronger storm. (Wash. Post)
