JFK-CUN for $500
guys
I'm getting $500 flights from JFK-CUN 12/17,27 - thought that flights on this segment were much cheaper but i'm paying more than coast to coast
What kind of deals would I typically get outside of these peak holidays like later in Jan or Feb?

Your challenge, IMO, is that high season in Mexico / Cancún begins 15 Dec 2012 and continues through Jan and Feb for a few months through Easter (Semana Santa). I doubt you will find a price under $500, even though JFK-CUN has Mexican LCC Volaris competing, during that time.
Now through Dec 15 are shoulder season - you'd be likely to find lower prices now, but not that low, IMO.
