Marriott says it won't block wi-fi (from the news section of the website).

"Marriott International Will Not Block Wi-Fi Devices
January 14, 2015 - Marriott International listens to its customers, and we will not block guests from using their personal Wi-Fi devices at any of our managed hotels. Marriott remains committed to protecting the security of Wi-Fi access in meeting and conference areas at our hotels. We will continue to look to the FCC to clarify appropriate security measures network operators can take to protect customer data, and will continue to work with the industry and others to find appropriate market solutions that do not involve the blocking of Wi-Fi devices."

If they only blocked wifi devices with the name "Marriott, Mariot, MARRI0T" or similar, people would have more sympathy.

I love this

I.E. "Marriot are not committed to protecting the security of Wi-Fi access in other areas of our hotels. Because we don't make money here."

FCC says it is 'aggressively' going after hotels that block personal Wi-Fi hotspots.

(Now if the FCC could only get its s together WRT Net Neutrality ...!)

Marriott was spanked, slammed and scolded severely for even thinking about this illegal action. As they should be.

This is so far from Bill Marriott's company anymore.

Marriott should have been spanked, slammed & scolded. However, on their recent endeavor to get it changed w/ the FCC, they had both Hilton & the Lodging Association supporting them so Marriott wasn't the only one looking at a revenue grab.

Cheers.

Marriott pulling out of the wifi grab:

"Marriott International Committed to Wi-Fi Access and Security

Statement by Bruce Hoffmeister, Global Chief Information Officer, Marriott International

Bethesda, Md., January 30, 2015 - Marriott International has decided to withdraw as a party to the petition seeking direction from the FCC on legal Wi-Fi security measures. Our intent was to protect personal data in Wi-Fi hotspots for large conferences. We thought we were doing the right thing asking the FCC to provide guidance, but the FCC has indicated its opposition. As we have said, we will not block Wi-Fi signals at any hotel we manage for any reason. And, as of January 15, we provide free Wi-Fi to all members of our Marriott Rewards program who book directly with us. We’re doing everything we can to promote our customers’ connectivity using mobile and other devices, and we’re working with the industry to find security solutions that do not involve blocking our guests' use of their Wi-Fi devices."

They are still blocking hotspots. Was in the convention center today with a Verizon MiFi. Great signal on the MiFi but it would not show up to connect. Same thing for 3 co-workers. Unbelievable.

Another convention centre was recently fined $750k

http://www.telecomtv.com/articles/wi...ed-750k-12755/
Just to emphasise how illegal this is {Mariott's scam} and how keen the agency is to wrinkle it out, the FCC has just announced that it has fined a company called Smart City, which describes itself as the largest independent provider of managed network services to the convention and trade show industry, $750,000 for blocking consumer hotspots at a number of events at various convention centres across the US.
Worth a complaint to your local FCC enforcement bureau?

https://www.fcc.gov/document/warning...ing-prohibited
ProhibitedPersons or Businesses Causing Intentional Interference to Wi-Fi Hot SpotsAre Subject to Enforcement ActionIn the 21st Century, Wi-Fi represents an essential on-ramp to the Internet.Personal Wi-Fi networks, or “hot spots,” are an important way that consumers connect to the Internet. Willful or malicious interference with Wi-Fi hot spots is illegal. Wi-Fi blocking violates Section 333 of the Communications Act, as amended.1 The Enforcement Bureau has seen a disturbing trend inwhich hotels and other commercial establishments block wireless consumers from using their own personal Wi-Fi hot spots on the commercial establishment’s premises. As a result, the Bureau is protecting consumers by aggressively investigating and acting against such unlawfulintentional interference.
