Prague Update

We spent the weekend at the Prague Marriott last weekend. We ended up just taking public transit as it was cheaper/faster than waiting for the hotel bus. The staff was very kind, and upgraded us to a Junior Suite on a very reasonable rate (EUR 139). There was no problem when we didn't want to check out until 1430 on Sunday and the food in the lounge in the evenings was quite good. Also, free internet and international newspapers.

We didn't get to sample the breakfast, having been out far too late to be up by ten. (This is one of my pet peeves, hotels that only serve breakfast until 10 at the weekend.)

Overall, we will def stay there again.

Ren Prague Hotel vs. Prague Marriott Hotel

Planning a trip in September for about 5-6 days. Both rated as Category 5, and am planning to use a reward. Any positives, negatives? Also input on weather would be great. Thanks

both hotels are across the street from each other. So location is not a factor. I stayed in both and I can't remember which one I liked better, which leads me to believe that both are great.

The more I think about it I think I liked the Marriott a tad bit better, but you really can't go wrong either way.

Weather.com can give you good averages, but early sep should be a good time to go. Less tourists (although Prague is always busy) and still nice weather. I'd guess 65 high, 50 low...

Beware of the cabdrivers who speed up the meters, so negotiate a price upfront without the meter. Ask your doorman what a fair rate to your destination would be

Cheers

FWIW, stayed at the Marriott summer 2003 as part of a package deal for flights (Czech Air) and hotels in Prague and Budapest. Totally prepaid. On check-in at the Prague Marriott, asked if there was availability to upgrade to a suite and what the cost would be. For $100/night, we got a beautiful suite and they included breakfast - we felt it was a fabulous bargain and if it is within your ability, I would certainly recommend trying. Don't think we would have done as well in advance.

Package was with a Czech travel agency (Tatra). Assumed we would use Marriott points for the hotels in Prague and Budapest, but 4 nights in Prague and 3 in Budapest (+ transfers) were included in a package that was only $400-500 more than we would have paid for the flights alone! Dollar wasn't great then but was better than now.

I have stayed in the Marriott there and found it great. I think it has a casino below it.

Practical cost efficient transfers from Renaisance Prague to PRG?

I will be spending a few nights next month with the family at the Renaissance Prague. While I am looking forward to the stay, I am trying to figure out a cost efficient yet practical way to get from the Renaissance to Prague Airport.

We will be traveling with the two Pupsters as well as Grandma Onedog. Splitting us between two cabs from what I have read would be prohibitively expensive (and a doubly incredible chance of being ripped off by the Prague taxis) and I am generally hesitant about splitting up the family (in case one gets a flat tire etc.) and I don't know if I am ready to try the public bus system yet with the youngins (generally if traveling with only the Mrs. where luggage is kept to a minimum, public bus is just fine!).

Is there any type of shared ride airport shuttle van (similar to Super Shuttle here in the USA) or a scheduled direct city center to airport bus? Is there a practical way to take the subway or tram to the airport from this hotel? Does the hotel have a car service that I can book for a decent price?

How long should I allow to get to the airport from the hotel? Our flight departs PRG at 7:30 a.m. on a sunday morning.

I am taking the whole gang on this trip so cost efficency is definitely a consideration.

Thanks for the help.

Onedog

There is an airport shuttle called Cedaz but I don't know if they would take you directly to your hotel. I'm sure that since you are a party of 5 that you would have your own minibus and they would drop you off right in front of your hotel. In case they don't, I know they have a stop at Namesti Republiky which is maybe 50 yards from this hotel. The cost should be around 480 Kc.

Public bus and then transferring to metro would cost 12Kc each but I guess thats not an option. If taking bus and metro you would take the 119 bus to the Dejvicka metro station and then change over to the Yellow line once you get to Mustek. Go one stop to Nam. Republiky and you are there. Takes about 25 min on shuttle bus, closer to a hour when using metro and bus to get to the city center. It's about $20 for the shuttle, I don't think its worth the hassle of public transportation since you will be travelling with children.

For your the trip back there is a 5:30 AM Cedaz bus from Namesti Republiky that gets to the airport before 6:00 am. Gives you 90 minutes which is more than enough.

How do I get from the Renaissance to Namesti Republiky so that I can take the Cedaz bus? Is this walking distance? Do we need to take a taxi from the hotel to Namesti Republiky? We only have to go from the hotel to the airport one way because we are staying with friends in Beroun before going to Prague and they will be able to drop us off directly at the Renaissance.

Thanks for your help,

Onedog

Its an easy walk...the vans leave every half hour if I recall correctly...I think that for 5 people it will around 500 crowns....I wouldn't discount the metro to the airport express bus (100) at the end of the yellow line ...Its dirt cheap, fast and easily manageable. The only problem you might have is if its during rush hour and the metro can get pretty full. If that concerns you take the Cedaz van.

Enjoy

Namesti Republiky is within walking distance although with young children and an older person, I would not bother with the bus. As someone already mentioned Cedaz WILL pick you up and drop you off to your hotel. Once you land at PRG, look for a booth for Cedaz (to your right as you come out of arrivals) where you should be able to make a reservation for a pick-up. Their fares are a flat-rate going lower as the number of people goes up. In your case, I would recommend hiring the entire van (seats about 8 or so I think) so you don't have to deal with picking/dropping anyone else up. I think it costs about 950 Krona for the entire van.

My now wife (then gf) went to Prague recently and stayed at the Renaissance, so if you do have any questions, feel free to PM.

Yes they will pick you up at the hotel, but its much cheaper from NR. I believe its 90 crowns if you meet the van there, versus about more than double that if they pick you up at your hotel...thus walking one block will probalby save you about 400 crowns which is about 18 dollars.

There probably won't be much competition at 5:30 AM but I'd still be at the stop early. We had wait an extra 1/2 hour for the next van when there weren't enough seats for our whole party.

My wife and I used Cedaz in February to get to the Marriott, which is across the street from the Renaissance. Very inexpensive, and very convenient. The shuttle stop at Nam. Republiky is an easy three minute walk from the hotel. And it is very easy to find your way to the hotel upon getting off the shuttle. Use Cedaz.
