I reviewed a thread about this hotel, but wonder if there are recent comments.
I would be interested to know how a Platinum is treated.
I always have stayed at the Oriental, but with my senior rate, and status, it almost seems silly, to spend double if I receive, or could receive certain upgrades at the Marriott.
I stayed ther in Nov. during a mileage run. Service was great and the spread at the concierge lounge is excellent. As part of the platinum gift, they gave a very large toiletry bag. I believe you'll be satisfied.
I stayed there in November while still being Gold, and indeed the lounge is really nicely located, good selection of drinks and large selection of food items. Breakfast is great as well.
My guess is that there probably still construction going on around the area so make sure you ask for a room high up and on a quiet side. The hotel is an octogonal tower making it a bit treaky to be on The quiet side.
If you stay there a sunday and want to indulge yourself, go for the Champagne Brunch. SGD 125 or something, all you can drink Moet, and all you can eat sushi, seafood (oysters, lobster, etc), from 12 to 4pm (5pm?).

Stayed in January and was treated very well.
Agree, the lounge is excellent for breakfast and evening canapes including cocktails. Overall, the service was excellent from checkin to checkout. Was upgraded to executive floor and given the option of buffet breakfast in the cafe ... variety and quality was good.
Fitting Plat amenity gift "Singapore Sling" and satay platter. Yummy!
I need a room in SIN on the 24th of Sept. I normally stay at the Marriott on Orchard road, but some special event is going on. I can get in using the plat 48 guarantee, but at a pretty steep/non-refundable rate.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for an alternate hotel?
Ritz Carlton is extremely impressive, and often good rates available. Swissotel Merchant Court is also good. Neither is in such an ideal location as the Marriott but I've stayed several times at both and was very happy.

If you have good lounge access in SIN or can otherwise amuse yourself in the airport (free movie?) for a few hours in the evening, try the transit hotel. If you want to go into town or to a hawker center, try the Crowne Plaza (not cheap) right at the airport but landside. There are rumored to be a few OK but cheap hotels close to the convention center and a very short taxi ride from the airport as well as a not-so-good resort along the coastal highway near the airport (perhaps the former LM Changi Village?).
If it weren't for the special event and elevated prices, I'd suggest staying on the side of Singapore closer to the airport--i.e., RC, Conrad, Fairmont, Swissotel (Mentioned above), Fullerton, MO, Mandarin Marina, rather than the Orchard Road hotels. I wouldn't want to risk blocked roads or bad traffic when you need to get to the airport in the morning.
Have you checked the newly opened casino hotel in the reclaimed land project roughly north east of the marina shopping and hotels area? Since it's new and not right in town, there's a chance that it isn't so full for your date. Similar logic would apply to the Sentosa Island properties, but they're a long way from the airport for one night when you can't enjoy the amenities there and I'd worry about the trip back to the airport in the morning as you pretty much cross over downtown Singapore.
