THIS IS A WIKI FOR AND OLD THREAD AND IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All WM registers allow 4 debit swipes per transaction, but YMMV per store and cashier. Refer to cards as debit.

-Visas issued by MetaBank work great. Pin is last 4 digits
-MC issued by US bank work good, but you need to change payment type to debit before they enter the amount in the register. Swipe and hit "Cancel" or "Change Payment" to select "Debit" on the screen and have them enter amount and then enter the pin. Pin in packaging.
-Any Vanilla product affiliated with InComm or ITC Financial Services will not work for swipes > $49.99.

NO variety or design of VISA or MC Gebit's will ever auto-drain at Walmart.

The amount of each swipe needs to be entered by the cashier. Ask to "split the payment by $$$". The Gebit must have current balance of that amount or more otherwise slip with Error 51 will print out. Warning: (YMMV) It appears (my experience on 3 occasions during prepaid card load and buying MO in 2 different WMs) that after the debit card was charged no cash could be credited back to the card. Cashier should issue cash back. Keep the slip and contact manager if in doubt. Remember date, time and register if no slip.

You cannot successfully swipe more than 4 cards in a single transaction. If the cashier screws up and enters $50.00 instead of $500.00 (thus making it impossible for 4 swipes to complete the transaction), the transaction will need to be canceled. The funds should return to your cards right away but may take 24 hours, so note the time and person helping you.

MO fee is usually 70 cents each. Subtract from your total or pay in cash.

Start slow and buy one MO to see how it works. Your store or cashier may work different and have rules that other store do not have.

Very few Kate's can sell money orders anymore.

Felt good and weird at the same time

I tried two different Walmarts, both rejected the VGCs I purchased from GCM.
GCM check balance page is currently down, could the two be related?

Tried to make a small payment to my car insurance and it was rejected, ...?!

It looks like the cards weren't activated despite having stickers that state otherwise. I'm on hold with GCM at the moment.

I got a reference number and a phone number to call on Monday or Tuesday if the cards haven't been activated by then.
This has happened to me before. I got a bad batch from them. I spent about a week back and forth on the phone with them but once it was resolved they actually reached out to me and said they would all work now and apologized for the inconvenience. Always register and check the balances online (I like to reset the PINs too at that time). I was unable to register them so that was my tip off to call them.

I also set the PIN online, too. I had a batch that didn't activate correctly. But I didn't know that because I never tried to set the pin. Made for a wasted trip to WM.

Split payments no longer allowed at select WMs?

I've just read in a blog of reports by different people mostly in the Bay Area that their WMs have started to disallow split payments for MO and B/P. Two identified areas are San Jose and Sta Clara and one from Southwest FLa also said the store he's been going to for years have suddenly enforced this rule. Hopefully, this will be contained in specific regions and not implemented at all WMs.

Yeah. The rumor started from a reddit post last week. Saying that today is the launch day of this new policy. I really think (and hope) this is just a region-specific thing, but will find out the next time I make the trip to WM

The thing is, are the machines hard coded to NOT accept more than one swipe when buying a MO?

Where I MS, my CS friends don't even care, as they know that a swipe or two + PIN is way safer than miscounting Money and ending the day with less bills or coins in their drawer or not checking correctly for a falsified $100 dollar bill.

Well, guess I have to go and try after work with my good ol CS friend, who was just promoted to Manager of the store in Middle of Nowhere Wally and Kingdom of MS

DPs won't matter as it's going to be region specific, and others have reported it worked fine today.

Lucky you!

Report back and let us know if anything changes

Not a techie, but I highly doubt WM will invest money to re-code their register to not accept split payments...? I would think it would be more of a memo from someone above.

My South SF Bay Area Walmart has told me of the new 1-swipe rule for a week now. Just did 4 swipes anyway with a friendly CSR.

Mine in PA and NJ no longer even allow MOs to be purchased using VGCs at all. Haven't in ages but before the final hammer they started with no split transactions. YMMV
