As of 6/19/2014, Walmart does not accept debit transactions above $49.99 from cards issued by Bancorp, namely Vanilla Visas (OV, VGC, etc.). Attempts result in "Alternate Tender Required," "Debit Not Available," and/or some other error message, at both registers and the Money Center Express (MCE, kiosk, Kate, ATM).

There is no workaround.

I've had recent success with MB MC (having to change payment method), and US Bank Visa, just haven't recently tried the other combinations.

Data:

Vanilla visa Bluebird failed at register (new and old) on $150.
Works at $45.
Had to change payment select debit.

Is the limit $49.99?

What's the current status of using Vanillas at Wal-Mart in general for loads/money orders/bill payments? We used to see almost daily reports of whether they were working well or not, but those have disappeared.

Have the reports disappeared because Vanillas now work reliably--or because they never work--or because of some other reason? I haven't tried Vanillas there in months and I'd like to know the odds before making a trek and waiting on line; the closest Wal-Mart to me is a pretty long drive. Thanks!

They work 100% of the time...

...for swipes of $49.99 or less.

One of my local WMs is now requiring embossed name on card, for any debit card being used for BB loads or MO purchases. They want to see the card, and so are refusing GCs of all types ( I use MB-issued GCS).

At. A different local WM, the name-on-card policy is more loosely enforced, more YMMV that one above. But they must have received the same memo.

Agree, I have 100% success using One Vanilla variable-load cards, using Kate to fund BB, but the upload MUST be less than $50.

Therefore, it takes me 11 loads to liquidate a $500 GC. Super-annoying. It takes ~20 minutes. Thankfully the old rumor about only getting to do 3 swipes in a row before Kate locks up is false.

Its not a rumor, you are just missing part of it. When liquidating the entire $500 of a GC, it will lock up with the 4th $500 because of velocity limits. Not a rumor, fact. It never had anything to do with amount of swipes, as anyone who has ever loaded $200 cards understands.

In my experience, it will work at $49.99 but fail at $50. So yes, $49.99 does seem to be the limit.

Also, lol @ the two posters above, both joining on the same date providing back up for each other.... oh noes, I wont get my rewards, say it aint so!
So $200 GC swipes at Kate have no velocity constraint? Only $500 GCs do?

Depends on how fast you can load them. The velocity limit on Kate is $2000 within 10 mins +/-. So if you can load 10x$200 gift cards in 10 minutes more or less then you may hit the velocity limit. It is all about total load within a certain time frame.

That is very true, but I don't think it is possible to load them that quickly.

Super annoying indeed. Especially when standing at Kate for 20 minutes to unload one $500 card. You folks that keep drawing attention are only hurting yourselves but standing there for an inexplicable amount of time.

Yeah I agree none of my Kate's is likely quick enough. I was recently behind (until I went to a cashier) somebody loading $100/time at Kate (he did at least 7 while I waiting/in line at the cashier) and was still going when I left. My life is way too short for that. Power to him though.
