Hotels North of Chicago

Any good, or even luxurious, hotels near the North Shore in Chicago? Preferably on the way from ORD to upper Wisconsin.

This isn't on the North Shore of Chicago, but these might be on your way to north WI:

Thanks - we have been to Canoe Bay and loved it - need something a little closer to ORD as it will be an overnight after a long flight and impending drive. We may have to settle for the Westin at ORD.

At O'Hare, the Westin is a fine hotel for an overnight.

If you are going straight north through Wisconsin, I love the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. It is about 150 miles north of the airport east of US94.

While is not a true Luxury, The Deer Path Inn seems to fit your requirements. It's in Lake Forest (40 minutes from O'Hare).

Have a Venison burger in the Pub. Tasty.

I was just about to suggest the exact same hotel...and dinner selection!
The Deerpath Inn is very nice and quiet. Nice, cozy bar with good food. There are shops and a wide chioce for dining all located within three or four blocks of The Inn.

Here is one I'd never heard of: http://www.hotelorrington.com/

But Evanston might be a little too close to the City for you.

FYI, it must be a good hotel because we couldn't get in for the dates we requested - quite busy evidently. But thanks -

The Hyatt in Deerfield may fit the bill. Certainly NOT luxurious, but its location off of 294 @ Lake Cook Road may be helpful.

Actually did get into the Deer Path with a special week-end rate for either a Suite or Executive Double - complete with buffet breakfast - so we are anxious to try it. Looks cute and quaint - and good location for a short stop-over. Thanks to all who posted suggestions -

There may be a hidden gem of a place I don't know about, but given the route and timing you've described, I think your best bet will in fact be to stay at one of the fine hotels around the airport. There's a Hyatt Regency, a Sofitel, a Westin, etc.

Then again, if you don't arrive at rush hour, and are willing to drive a little out of your way, you could stay at -- and you said luxurious -- the Peninsula, downtown, and then drive North from there...

The Orrington is a marvelous hotel -- opened a couple of years after a $30+M renovation. Service is excellent. The rooms and public areas are very stylish. There is a state of the art conference center. Restaurants are very good. My only minor problem there was a slight wait for valet parking. It's an easy walk to the Lake. And Evanston is full of fine restaurants.
