I am staying at the Far Eastern Plaza at the moment. I am surprised it is such a good hotel (in Taipei) with good service as well. Room is large and bathroom is big and nice.

Stayed at the Far Eastern again in January 2008 and it is about the same. Good service, good buffet restaurant and a generally good location.

I wrote a scathing trip report about the Regent in this forum last September, based on a stay over US Labor Day weekend. Mediocre would be charitable. That hotel did a lot of damage to the Regent brand in my mind, and some to FS too, since FS manages it.

What's the area around either of the Les Suites like? In terms of shopping, restaurants (Chinese), convenience to sights?

Any reports on the hotels also appreciated.

Which Les Suites? --There seem to be 2. They are both in the greater downtown area and easy cab rides to pretty much anywhere in the city. The Da-An location (near the corner of Ren-ai and Dunhua S. Rds.) would be my preference anyway, but especially since they're putting in a subway line near the other.

We will be traveling to TPE next weekend, and unlike my usual travels and typical MRs, this one is a special one. I will be traveling with my sister for the first time in 10 years! TPE is our first stopover and we have a full day and half with a 11 year old girl with us.

So here comes my question. Which hotel is considered "best" in Taipei? The thing I am looking for are, newly renovated (at least maintained well) good breakfast buffet and lounge offerings. And it would be great if located in good part of the area with something to do. The key word is newish and luxury. Any recommendation would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Hotels I've heard about are:
Sherwood (so far, the best review but no explanation on why)
shangri-la (same)
westin
Hyatt (old and unrenovated)

Thanks!

Seems I am the first reply who stayed at The Landis. My decision was based on the LHW affiliation (although that doesn't mean much anymore) and the relative proximity to the airport (early morning flight).

Although The Landis is definitely not a FS type of luxury hotel, the service is very good. You can feel that they put every effort into friendliness and service, in order to make up for the lack of "grandezza".

If you are into Art Deco, you may even like the interior design.

new hotel in Taipei

Hotel Eclat just opened at the end of last year, so everything is still pretty new. Although I haven't stayed there personally, the hotel is a member of the Small Luxury Hotel so the quality should be ok. It is not far from the Shangri-la.

Wow, looks pretty good! Based on the picture, it can qualify as a hidden Gem in taipei. I can definitely stay here with a friend but wonder if this is kid friendly enough? Great find though. Thanks!
Please keep em comming. I love these kind of hotels.

Thumbs up independent hotels in taipei and asia

stayed at the LE PETIT SHERWOOD in taipei a while back and it was a real gem ...sherwood is nice but petit had a nice edge....excellent location and real nice boutique feel

also remembered a UNITED hotel ...was modern and minimalist but did not stay there....

not impressed by les suites .

the ususal suspects tend to be blah and good ..but in Taipei as in alot of Asian cities now ...HK , SIN , SHANGHAI , BEIJING ...even KUALA LUMPUR AND JAKARTA ....smaller hotels , not part of a chain can be found and are very goodd and have great value some even located n so called 3 or 4 stars hotels.....look harder and ye shall find !!!!

have fun

FYI. Le Petit Sherwood was closed a couple of years ago. The owner of Hotel Eclat bought the building and refurbished everything. So Hotel Eclat is occupying the same building previously occupied by Le Petit Sherwood.

No sure if Hotel Eclat is particularly kids-friendly. But my guess is most hotels in Taipei are about the same in terms of kids-friendliness (unless you want things like swimming pool etc)
