SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED! The former Paradise Beach Hotel, which has been an idle upmarket property for several years, will once more take its place among the prime hotels in Barbados. Yesterday in London, Sandals Group of companies, which owned the Spring Garden, St Michael property since 1992, sold it to a group of international investors headed by hotel magnate Michael Pemberton and Robin Paterson. It is understood that local construction magnate Sir Charles Williams and his brother Ralph “Bizzy” Williams are also involved in this project. The new owners are set to develop a new mutil-million-dollar five-star hotel with 125 rooms and associated facilities, along with 80 luxury villas. The former Paradise will carry the logo of one of the world’s most recognised brands – Four Seasons – and will now be called Clearwater Bay. In Barbados, the keys to the property transferring possession to the new owners, were handed over by Sandals’ agent Kashmie Ali to Lynne-Marie Simmons, one of the attorneys for the investors, and Paula Blackburn, the representative for Michael Pemberton. Earlier this year in an interview, Pemberton said investors were “absolutely bowled over by the property”. He added that Martin Ground of the interntaional firm Ground, Kemp and Associates, which had won the World’s Best Hotel Design on more than one occasion, would be the lead architect. A real result. This is a good spot, as well - probably the closest resort hotel to Bridgetown (not that you go there much anyway). It will keep Sandy Lane on its toes, if nothing else.
However, given the massive delays getting the new Hilton finished, I think 2010 is a sensible opening date ... |

Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch said yesterday that the half-billion-dollar transformation would see construction starting on 125 rooms and 100 villas under the Four Seasons brand by January. The principal leading the project, which sits on 30 acres of land at Black Rock, St Michael, will be Michael Pemberton, formerly of Royal Pavilion and Glitter Bay. While the luxury villas would be completed by the end of 2007, the hotel rooms would not be until the first quarter of 2009. Among other features would be a 30 000-square-foot spa, water sports facilities and fine restaurants, said Lynch, during a Press briefing at Parliament Buildings after a tour of Bridgetown yesterday. The minister said he met with developers of the property on Thursday and described Pemberton as a person who brought a wealth of experience in the luxury hotel industry and was dedicated to the development of Barbados. So far, he said, Pemberton had reported good response from several Government departments, including Town and Country Planning. Lynch said he was also given the assurance that several local contractors would be working along with Pemberton on the project. In a news item in January, Pemberton identified Martin Ground of the international firm Ground Kemp and Associates as the lead architect. The firm has won the World's Best Hotel Design on several occasions. Paradise operated for several years as a luxury resort under the world-renowned Cunard Resorts until 1992, when it was brought by Jamaican hotel magnate Gordon "Butch" Stewart as part of a deal for two other hotels in the region. Work to begin on Paradise property Thursday, 15 June 2006 Developers of the controversial Paradise Beach property have finally received the green light from the Town and Country Planning Department to begin construction of a five star hotel on the west coast site. Executive Director of Paradise Beach, Michael Pemberton tells the Business Report that the paper work was fast-tracked and construction will begin within the next three months. A 125-room hotel operated by Four Seasons Hotel, as well as 80 luxury villas will be built on the half million square feet of land, formerly owned by the Sandals group. Mr. Pemberton says the investment is significant. Mr. Pemberton, who also owns the Glitter Bay and Royal Pavilion hotels says he's excited about bringing the Four Seasons brand to Barbados. - Play Video - |
I love Barbados. They are the nicest people. Is this property you speak of, the one that Sandals was supposed to develop in the early 90's?
One time when I was in Barbados we had the same waitress everyday. We told her that we wanted to see more of the culture. She actually invited us to go to church with her and then took us to her mothers house for Sunday dinner. Her mother put on the biggest dinner I have ever seen. She made sure that we got a taste of all the Bajan foods. I never forgot that kindness. After church a lot of people from that congregation stood around and talked to us. I noticed that everyone was very dressed up. If only it was that way here again. The people of Barbados are some of the kindest people I have ever met. |

BRITISH property developers Robin Paterson and Mike Pemberton are behind ambitious plans to attract some of the world’s wealthiest investors to two new leisure projects in the Caribbean. When completed they will rival Sandy Lane, the multi-millionaires’ playground in Barbados. Paterson and Pemberton have acquired sites in Barbados and Grenada to build two hotel and villa complexes with a development value of $1.6 billion (£855m). The duo have signed up Four Seasons, the hotelier, to anchor both resorts. In addition, a $250m banking facility to help finance the construction costs has been put in place by HBOS. The Barbados project is now under way. When finished it will include a 117-bed hotel with 44 villas that will range in price from $3m to $12m. Four of the beachfront villas have already been sold. Paterson and Pemberton intend to have a plane to ferry guests between the resorts, which are 150 miles apart. - more - |

Executive directors Michael Pemberton and Robin Paterson of Cinnamon 88, developers of the five-star property in Black Rock, St Michael, said 250 staff would be needed to service the 36 villas, while 500 would be employed at the hotel. It will have 106 rooms, including penthouses and beach houses. They said they had already received applications from individuals looking to work at the property which is tagged at US$380 million. Paterson said the resort anticipated the majority of the staff employed would be local. He added there would also be job opportunities for pool maintenance, landscape maintenance and security personnel who would be trained within the hotel. "Those are highly valuable contracts that will go to local contractors," he said, noting that there would also be work for food and wine suppliers. The executive said that from March, Four Seasons would be starting its recruitment campaign, adding that facilities would be built for training. He said this had to be in place since the hotel was set to open at the end of 2009 or early 2010. Pemberton said the resort would ensure service standards were the same as the rest of the world's Four Seasons Hotels. He said the resort was already in negotiations with the PomMarine, the Barbados Community College's Division of Hospitality. "They have seen the Four Seasons manuals and standards for training programmes. It will knit together," he said of the school from which 300 students graduate each year. Paterson said it was hoped to have all 36 villas built in the next two-and-a-half years. "The first 16 will be completed in September next year and they will need to be serviced. In the next 18 months, the others will be completed "We want to make sure that when the villas are completed, Four Seasons is ready to provide a service to those villas," he added. Already, 65 per cent of the first phase of the villas have been sold, with celebrities like Lucian Grange, chairman of Universal Studios; composer, Lord and Lady Webber; and Simon Cowell, of American Idol fame, listed as owners of the properties which range from US$5 million to US$17 million. Paterson, however, said Four Seasons was not a development for the exclusive or elite. The resort, which will cater to young children and teens, will also feature a 50-seater cinema, an Olympic-sized pool, tennis courts, three restaurants and infinity pools for each of the villas. |

According to website they are just barely starting on the main building and have not started anything on the rest of the hotel portion. Combine this with a tiff between C88 and the Guayanese workers and this project may take 2-3 more years!

Found this on the Four Seasons Residences website that seems to suggest that building is moving. The picture that they show of the building http://residences.fourseasons.com/ap...erbarbados.com is not very inspiring.
Due to difficult ground conditions, delays were encountered on the start of the construction of the hotel, however we are now pleased that the ground conditions in the area of the Central Facilities building which is 80,000 square feet (7,342 square metres) is currently being excavated and dealt with as per our earth consultants; Jaca Sierra. (top image: excavation in progress for Central Facilities) This building is a significant part of the hotel which will house the Front of House Department, Meeting Rooms, Board Room, all-day dining, the major swimming pool, bar and grill leading down to the beach.
