The newest offering, Grand Hyatt Mumbai, is superb. See:
http://www.mumbai.grand.hyatt.com

(This is not to be confused with Hyatt Regency which is a stone's throw from the international terminal.)

Also near the domestic terminal is the Orchid. I am not too enthusiastic about it.

Ummm...I just stayed at the Grand Hyatt yesterday and it was so-so... Going to the Grand Hyatt after coming off an international flight - it took about 20 minutes at around midnight and the access road to the hotel wasn't well lit; one part of it is a secluded, bumpy dirt/gravel road where I was thinking "No way would I want my younger sis travelling alone in a taxi here at night". The hotel itself is good - rooms are spacious and they have some very nice long-stay apartments, but the service was ordinary. In my opinion, its only useful if you have a daily need to go to and from the Bandra-Kurla Complex for work - but then, my knowledge of Mumbai is limited

I'm at the Hyatt Regency right now and I think I'm going to stay here in the future if I'm transiting through Mumbai even if I have to take 20 minutes or more to connect to the domestic terminal. I've stayed here once before and its great for coming off or leaving for an international flight - only takes a 2 min ride in their complimentary car. I love the split-level bathrooms and the staff here has been fantastic both times - blows away the service at the Grand Hyatt or the other two airport hotels that I've stayed at - Le Meridien and Leela.

Afterthought - anyone stayed at the Intercontinental Grand? They have some pretty good rates - I saw a US$87 rate for this week. Grand Hyatt was US$108 and the Hyatt Regency is $135, although I got a corporate rate of US$70.

The new Intercontinental close to Nariman Point is quite nice. Much nicer than the other hotels in Mumbai due to is newness. But if I were to visit Mumbai, I would stay at The Oberoi for business and the heritage wing of the Taj Mahal for pleasure. The Oberoi is convenient and very nice for a business hotel. Decent rooms, good service and can't really ask for more. The view at night of the Queen's necklace is also impressive. But for atmosphere, the heritage wing is the best. Unbeatable charm and also that free breakfast in the lounge overlooking the Gateway. It also has a relaxing pool.

Thank you for your feedback.

When Hyatt Regency Mumbai first opened a couple of years ago, I was very impressed with the quality and efficiency of service. Its proximity to the international airport was an added plus. Furthermore, it used to have a policy of 24 hours check-in (so you didn't have to pay for the previous day if your flight got in early in the morning) and also a policy which allowed you to pay for 8-hours blocks of stay. Alas, this very convenient feature was pulled last year. I have noticed that the Hyatt Regency has steadily gone downhill since my first stay there in early 2003. I will no longer recommend it as enthusiastically as I used to. Currently the best choice near the international airport is, in my opinion, the Grand Maratha Sheraton.

On the other hand, the Grand Hyatt Mumbai seems to show a lot of promise, and has a striking physical presence. What exactly were the problems with the service there?

I find the J.W. Mariott Juhu Beach to be a best bet. With a room facing the pool/ocean -- you really forget that you are in mumbai. The staff is excellent and the rooms are quite comfortable -- even for extended stays. The hotel is full of activity 24/7 -- so eating dinner at 5am seems normal (as is possible).

The Grand Hyatt is very nice -- however it seems a bit too rigid for my taste. They really need to pave the rest of the road and the slums are only a few feet away from the main entrance.

The Renessance seems to be a great option as well. Modern rooms, a great pool and extensive restaurants make this a great option. The Renessance is near a large shopping / entertainment complex so american activities (i.e. Bowling) are not too far away.

If the Hyatt Regency has gone downhill, it must have been really good in its prime

There weren't any problems with the GH service. It was efficient, but not warm and friendly like the HR, where the duty manager came out to greet me and welcome me back. I was pleasantly surprised since I had no status with Hyatt. Both times I checked out, someone from reception escorted me out to the car and had a quick chat with me. The gym at the HR is fantastic - bright and really conducive to working out. Also, the normal bathrooms (can't speak for the Grand Club or suites since I never saw them) at the GH don't have rainshowers like at the HR.

Sure, its not a "luxury" hotel in the true sense of the word, but it does the trick for me.

sandy 11 - I have seen 3 posts from you (2 here, 1 in SPG) pushing the Leela Kempinski. Are you related to the hotel in any way? You might want to check the FT Terms of Service if you are.

sandy11's website is the Leela Hotel website (see profile). That should be a clue that this poster is just spamming FlyerTalk with self-serving commercial messages.
