In short: Zecha opened his first Azerai in Luang Prabang in February 2017. Aman ousted CEO Jolivet with owner Doronin taking over, will open Shanghai this autumn, while other rumored locations seem to be late or cancelled. GHM lost some existing properties, whilst having a long list of announcements. And Ahn Luh opened its first property in Shanghai 2016, with more to come...

NEW AZERAI-HOTELS and other ZECHAPROJECTS

- Azerai Can Tho, Vietnam. Would be the first relevant hotel in the Mekong Delta. Architect is Pascal Trahan - same as Luang Prabang. Spotted first by bearbrick. Officially announced for Dezember 2017, already details on website: https://www.azerai.com/can-tho

Amanyangyun Shanghai: Located 30km outside Shanghai, restored buildings and trees will be set on 100 acres of land overlooking ornamental lakes and gardens and will include 24 suites, along with 26 villas. It's on a yet unspoiled pacific coastline, but sadly other resorts will be developed nearby as well. No opening date set or rumored yet.

- Aman on Banda Island, Indonesia, as reported by Groombridge: "A 20-room renovation of an existing colonial era building on the remote island of Banda Niera (one of the nutmeg islands). - Ahn Luh Yanqi Beijing, "scheduled to open in Autumn 2017". Located at the foot of Yanshan Mountains, Hairou District, 60 km northeast from Beijing City Centre. The Yanqi Lake scenic area is one popular vacation area of Beijing. The Ahn Luh Yanqi is designed by brillant Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Interior designers are Japanese designer Akihiro Wakasa of HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates) together with Agnes Affandy who inherited renowned interior designer Jaya Ibrahim’s design style.

- Ahn Luh Zhangjiajie, located on the northwest border of Hunan Province in south-central China..Zhangjiajie City was originally the ancient city of Dayong, which has been re-built and is located at the gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a core scenic area of Wulingyuan and one famous geological park.

AHN LUH - DISSAPEARED FROM WEBSITE:

- Ahn Luh Dujiangyan in Chengdu, which was "a project where the historical and cultural elements feature prominently given that the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, along with Mount Qingcheng, are placed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Was originally supposed to be the first opening.

- Ahn Luh Yanming Lake. Another lake resort, nearby Zhengzhou City. Another one formerly scheduled for a 2016 opening.

Sad thing about Jena for me is that I hardly know anybody there anymore. Everyone just left and that really says a lot. Last time I was there, mind you this was May 2016, only two staff members I knew were still working. I don't know if they brought in another Resident Manager after Astrid left?

Rates are pretty good. Wish the website had a little more detail. Will be up to time to see how the concept works out thought Gary T is a great GM (did I do that right?).

There are a lot more photographs in the pipeline, so the website should have more images in the next few months. Grand opening is early March, but the hotel is definitely open for business right now.

There is a lot of written detail on the website. Did you download the brochure?

Just saw the pics posted upthread on twitter. Those seem to be better than the website.. I did read the descriptive detail. Pretty boilerplate stuff IMO.

Half of the gallery seems to be stock photos. Picture of a back, picture of some food...

Seems that they could have launched the website with ore pictures of the rooms, grounds, pool etc.

My first impression after looking at the pictures is...meh.

It looks...nice. But nothing spectacular or even particularly luxurious. Although I do like the look of the rooms over the Amantaka rooms. My overall impression is that it's basic. Well done basic, but still basic.

I'm sure the service will be fine. It looks like a very nice guest house, and not a luxury hotel.

Think I'll hold out for the Rosewood.

I always thought that Adrian Zecha's new concept would confuse his Aman devotees, as most expect luxury from him, whereas Azerai is, as you say, good basic stuff. It is not meant to be a luxury hotel - the idea was modelled on the old Serai 3-star in Bali - simple, basic but full of quality.

Considering the costs compared to an Aman, I think it looks excellent. With Gary as GM, I would not hesitate.
