In July 2004, the Site was sold by the Central Bank to the existing owners who represent some of the USA's most prominent individuals in the world of finance, media and the arts. Their desire to work with Aman Resorts and alongside a leading investor in upscale residential resorts resulted in Dolphin being brought into the deal.
Dolphin will participate with a stake of at least 70% in the Joint Venture
Aman Resorts (up to 25%)
Axia Ventures, a consortium of private investors (which can acquire up to 5% of the Joint Venture). It should be noted that Antonios Achilleoudis, a director of Axia Ventures, is also a member of the Board of Directors of Dolphin. The exact
shareholdings will be determined by March 2008

Despite of being an Aman lover, I'm so surprised about choosing Dominican Republic for their new opening... It has never been a high end destination even if, I guess, they picked one of the most beautiful part of the island but I'm afraid how they will do to attract luxury travelers in a very "cheap" destination... Personally I'll do not choose this Aman for holidays.

I mean Dominican Republic is not even a backpacker destination but a place polluted by massive tourism... When I said "high end" destination, I wanted to mention beautiful places not yet too touristy, not necessarily places for "high end" tourism like Bhutan...

Agree that there are lot of 'all inclusive' type places there. Yuck. And it would be disappointing if the Aman were close to them. But it's a big island, maybe there is not that much around where the resort is. At least I hope that's the case. So far the pictures I've seen look nice, so hoping for the best.

Most Europeans wouldn't be caught dead mentioning the dominican republic as their preferred leisure destination. This place is done.
Aman Playa Grande looks terrific, though. Maybe a project of this magnitude and cachet is exactly what this region needs.

The renderings I've seen are curiously not very Aman though* - apart from the pool (actual pic, not just a rendering).
* Not in a bad way - it looks very sleek ~ reminds me of Alila Villas Uluwatu or Soori. Maybe the real thing will come out different.

I've had the same impression than you. It really looks like AVS. That said, sometimes, real thing looks different so just wait and see how it will be. However, despite of the location on the island which seems to be far from all inclusive resorts, luckily. But I still think Aman should have choose a more secluded island, not yet explored that much...
