Charged for slippers in luxury hotel chain in northAmerica ?

Charged for slippers in luxury hotel chain in northAmerica ?

Is it normal that a luxury hotel chain in northAmerica charged 80 for a laundry bag, shoes bag and slippers ?

Slippers are regular disposable one.
Laundry & Shoes bag are in fabric but nothing special (I used them to put my dirty clothes and... the "Bulgari" bath amenites...

You need to be more specific about what happened and where in order to get meaningful answers. Generally speaking, my experience is that hotels which provide cloth laundry and shoe bags do not regard them as something that the guest should take away with them,

Thank you Richard in SF.
This is the RC Montreal for a 5 nights stay in August
Below the reply I got from RC Montreal reservation manager (found out of the charge the CC statement).

I always used the the laundry bag for my own dirty clothes and was never charged.
The slippers were in a sealed bag, are they going to re-use them for the next guest ?
When the reply said "Ritz-Carlton sales item" is that a a RC policy to charge for these items ?

Regarding the charge of 83.94$CAD, it
correspond to Ritz-Carlton sales item, Laundry Bag, Shoes Bag and
Slippers.

I agree with regard to the cloth laundry bags. However, I'm curious as to what people consider the policy with regard to hotel slippers? Are they disposable and can you take them to use at home?

I never use them, but never assume they or the bathrobes are mine to take away,I'm shocked anyone would.
I've always assumed, the slippers would be sanitised and repackaged for the next resident, much like your headphones on a business or first class flight.

Most of the time after a few days, they're no longer in good condition and can't be reused.

The slippers aren't the problem. Obviously, slippers that someone else has already worn should be thrown away so it would be OK to take those if for some reason they wanted to keep them. In my humble opinion they only got charged for them because they proved themselves a thief when they took a cloth laundry bag and cloth shoe bag. Once you steal from somebody, they get angry and look for little ways to get revenge. On the other hand, to charge someone $80 for a laundry bag and shoe bag is itself stealing, so both parties are guilty as far as I'm concerned. It seems like luxury hotels are always looking for ways to rip people off with bogus fees for such thing as internet, fake "resort" fees, etc. but charging $80 for a couple of two buck cloth bags is a little slimy.

I wouldn't have stolen the bags in the first place but if I had accidentally taken them away, I would return them by some mail or parcel service that provides delivery confirmation. I would then dispute the charge with the credit card company. I don't know if it would work because I've never actually removed an entire laundry bag -- I like to pack light! -- but it seems like it should unless the real intention was to rob the customer rather than discourage theft.

If businesses really do sanitize slippers (or headphones for that matter), ugh. I already won't use the headphones.

I've never been charged for slippers which are of the disposable kind. I can understand if it's sanitised in 3/4 star porperties especially in some countries but if luxe hotels did that, I would avoid them. I don't take cloth bags but plastic if I need them for dirty clothes. I am sure they have already costed such amenities like slippers, bath products etc in the room charge.

Ritz-Carlton has no problem to sell USD 12 slippers that cost less than one dollar each.

I am not quite sure you can compare slippers with bathrobes...

I use slippers only at the pool/spa and always throw them in the bin of the spa.
I would be more than surprised to be charged for that!

Sanitise cheap made in China slippers ?!
That would cost much more than just replacing them.

I fully agree with you Nicolas.
Please note that for 24 euros you have the bag with the slipper, that's makes a big difference.

Interesting that on the Ritz on line shop there is no laundry bag available for sell.... Of course CAD 40 per bag will receive some interesting comments....

You don't need to book a room to buy their slippers so they sell them at the price they want.
However IMO slippers when you book a room you can take the slippers with you. In some hotels they even bring you some new slippers daily (sometimes twice a day with the turndown)

.

Thank you Peachfront and I agree with you that if you steal from somebody he'll get angry
However why should they get angry ? Because I took a 50 cts laundry bag ? (I spent only 5 nights there, maybe I should spent 3 months to be entitled for a free laundry bag ?)

Let's go further, let's say that I was wrong to pick up the laundry bag, is that a good enough reason to charge me something ?, (not to mention yet any figure)

Let's go further and admit that they're fully right and must charge (despite never an hotel has ever charged for a laundry bag and I'd love to meet someone who has been charged for a laundry bag)
Does CAD 40 is a normal price for a 50 cts bag !!! That's ridiculously overpriced

Also I didn't see a price list in the room for the towels etc. (in some hotels they indicate that you can buy towels for that much, buy the ice bucket etc etc)
Here nothing. Maybe if I ask them they'll reply that there a price list at the very end of the drawers behind the TV ....
No price was indicated.

IMO The hotel was wrong to charge for the bag and even more wrong to charge this ridiculous price coming out of their heads (not to mention the slippers where we all agree that they're free to take)

Unfortunately the cost of a courier from France to return them will be high.
Maybe if I return to this hotel one day. I'll put Laundry Bag, Shoes Bag and Slippers on the desk with an empty envelope and will write a note : "please put 83.94$CAD, in the envelope for cedricgerald sales item, Laundry Bag, Shoes Bag and Slippers"

As a separate note , I was double charged for a drink at the hotel bar (I paid in cash and they charged it to my room folio and didn't pay attention at the check out - I caught a bkfst charges but didn't catch all mistakes).
The reply from the manager is : "After verification, we will credit the 16.10$CAD as it was indeed a duplicate. The accounting department will credit this amount shortly."
I thought the basic rule was to say at least "sorry" when we make a mistake, especially in a luxury hotel, especially when you're the reservaiton manager....
