I was just there in June'12. There was MASSIVE construction in process. The hard product is very good. The service left much to be desired, particularly at the upstairs bar/resturant. I doubt I return.

If you want great in Singapore- there is only the valley wing at the Shangri-La. If you don't want that- step down a notch and just stay at the Conrad (which is a good business hotel although not luxury- they do however have the great Acca Kappa toiletries on the executive levels as well as top rate breakfast in Oscars).

Agree about Fullerton Bay - pity.
I stick with FS mostly as it's smaller than the rest and the beds are comfortable, but in general, I would not say that there was a single great hotel in Singapore, and I have tried them all.

The FS has the advantage that it's quiet yet convenient to Orchard St. Other than that, it isn't that impressive, had some serious service omissions the last time I stayed there.

I was not a fan of the FS Singapore... rather dated and service not amazing. What about the RC? That is a great hotel in my books.

Of course William and Kate stay at Raffles...it's where the Queen stayed during her visit to Singapore about five or ten years ago. I was staying in Raffles at the time too, and it was interesting.

Within striking distance of the tired, dated, Four Seasons is the valley wing of the Shangri-La (it is operated as a separate hotel practically from the main part of the Shangri-La). The service is wonderful, the rooms are very large, the receptions at happy hour are legendary, the breakfast is great, and the internet is both Fast and completely Free for as many devices as you would like.
Once you go over there- you will wonder why you went anywhere else.

I must say; however, that the RC SIN was somewhat disappointing after sandwiching this stay between the Oriental Residence and The Siam in Bangkok!

Just stayed there and will not again. They screwed my Centurian Reservation and tried to blame it on AmEx, even when I showed them an email from their hotel confirming.
also pool closed early due to hotel function. One of reasons staying there (told pool at sunset over harbor great). No advance warning.
Do not stay here. I would recommend the Ritz
After writing this, the manager came to me aghast at above. Worked very hard to have me change my opinion. Would try again. I will admit that the staff almost fawns over one - service is tremendous.

I would lean towards St Regis w/Bentley pickup. Ritz as a 2nd depending on what location is better suited for your purposes.

We stayed in a corner club level suite at the Ritz and it was a beautiful room with an amazing view. The club was great too. The hotel itself is very corporate and large. The proximity to the new bay gardens is nice and the marina bay sands as well.
Where ever you stay definitely opt for the VIP pick up. Being whisked through customs is always a bonus and saves so much time. Loved that. Ritz does it with and E class Mercedes with Wifi.
