Watermark San Antonio: Amex FHR not honored?

This is a first, maybe one of you can enlighten me.

Called Amex to book the Watermark and the agent was having trouble getting it come up so she called the hotel. She came back and said that the hotel told her there was a convention in town that date (Dec 8) and they were not allowing bookings from FH&R program for that night. They have a room available, just not for Amex Plat FH&R. I can book it online on my own but I'd rather get the Amex perqs.

She's going to check with her supervisor and call me back, but in the meantime I'm sort of perplexed. Is this usual & customary?

That's odd. I've used the FHR program a fair number of times, and I have never had that happen.

Just out of curiosity, I just checked to see if Virtuoso rates are available for a 1-night stay on December 8th, and they are! Makes it even more strange -- I would think that if they are offering Virtuoso rates, then they'd also be offering FHR rates.

Let us know how things turn out.

The agent just called me back and said that after further consideration, the hotel was happy to offer me a room at the FHR rate with all amenities.

The "further consideration" being that the Amex manager called the hotel manager and got it sorted out.

So, all is well that ends well. I'm not holding my breath for the upgrade, but that's fine. I'll take the free breakfast & lunch.
