Perhaps more in the infamous category is Harry and Leona Helmsley who used to own the New York Palace hotel.

Going back into time many of the top echelon families in the US were hoteliers: Astor, Waldorf, Flagler, Vanderbilt (I think)

Interesting article.

Need to add The Savoy in London to Al Waleed's list.

Didn't hear about his Raffles being sold.

The Savoy London is a Fairmont. Al Waleed also owns the Raffles group. He is divesting majority ownership of Raffles Singapore but the Raffles management group will continue to run it.

Fun list trophycollector.

Some others:

Michael Dell - Four Seasons Maui
David Murdock (Dole) - Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay and Four Seasons Lodge at Koele (Lanai)
Dick DeVos (Amway) - Peter Island and a Cape Eleuthera project in Bahamas
David Copperfield - Mushay Cay (Bahamas)

Francis Ford Coppola
Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf

Forgot to add for Richard Branson - Mosquito Island

And though they're not all that luxurious anymore, I'd be happy to stay at any former Laurance Rockefeller owned property in a natural preserve: Caneel Bay (St John USVI), Little Dix Bay (Virgin Gorda BVI), Mauna Kea (Big Island), Jenny Lake Lodge (Grand Teton Nat'l Park)
