We were just at Grand Hotel Tremezzo and loved it.

The only thing bad about our room was the flooring was cheap as was a table that had a wood top painted to look like marble. We only really noticed when we saw the condensation on the ice bucket.

I heard a report on the BBC in the last few days about Como town and the surrounding roads becoming clogged up with migrants trying to find a way into Switzerland. Como's railway station was said to resemble a migrant camp.

Isn't Switzerland part of Schengen?

Indeed it is.
Not part of the EU but they still belong to Schengen area.

Il Sereno, Lake Como

I would seriously consider the new Il Sereno on Lake Como - very contemporary, so not at all like Vila d'Este, but quite refreshing I think, and with great views. http://www.ilsereno.com/

The other one to watch is if Four Seasons take over CastaDiva, which has been mooted for quite a while now.

vuittonsofstyle, is il sereno's Villa Pliniana exclusive-use only? (seems that way, dont see any mentions of taking individual reservations anywhere.)

I think they will see how bookings go, but it was certainly designed for groups or families/friends travelling together.

Which room/suite category did you stay in ?

The rooftop suites with outdoor jacuzzi seem next level.

I checked with the hotel and indeed Villa Pliniana is not rented by the room, it's rented as a full unit of 10 bedrooms.

For special events it can be rented for the day (75k€).
And for family / friends gatherings rates go from 95k€ for 3 nights up to 120k€ for a full week. Chef services come with an extra charge
