A good sommelier alwas tries to gauge a guest's price range and never tries to apply pressure or upsell. It's always best to specify price range if in doubt or if it's one's first time at the restaurant. This can be as subtle as pointing to a certain price range on the wine list without saying any number aloud. In order for any sommelier to best do his/her job, the guest has to give some input first, not only about price range but about preferences and food pairings.

We follow the sommeliers advices quite often and never had a bad surprise so far. They always pick up reasonable priced bottles. In some restaurants the sommelier will discretely show the bottle he is advising in the wine list so you can check the price.

I took my daughter to Le Cinq for lunch in February 2016 to celebrate my birthday. This was right after they regained their third Michelin star. I indiscreetly took many photos without being reproached. I was so afraid that my then 21 month old daughter wouldn't be able to sit through a long lunch but she gave daddy the best birthday gift possible by taking a long nap to allow him to enjoy an exquiste lunch:
