to me it only seems rational to redeem LH miles for a non-connecting flight within Europe, and even then UA/US charge you fewer miles unless it is within 2 weeks.

This BA. LH didnt follow suit.

Anyway I think miles redemption is only valuable on premium travel or on exotic segments where regular prices are very high like to Eastern Europe or Russia. On other segments as said Taxes and YQ are to high to make miles redemption worthwile

LH to raise fuel-surcharge eff. march 13th

Lufthansa will raise the fuel-surcharge on short and mediumhaul flights from 14 to 17 Euro. So tickets should be issued by March 12th in order to get the old price.

Interestingly a mysterious USD component calculation has appeared (see green highlights)

Lufthansa adjusts fuel surcharge on European routes. Fuel surcharge on long-haul flights remain unchanged.

In recent weeks, crude oil and kerosene prices have again reached a new peak. In response to this development, Lufthansa is adjusting its fuel surcharge on its flights on domestic German and intra-European routes. The surcharge will accordingly be raised by three euros and will thus amount to 17 euros per flight segment, effective 13 March 2008.

The surcharge on long-haul flights will not be affected by this latest increase and will remain at 77 euros per flight segment.

Lufthansa continually monitors oil prices and will make any future adjustments to the fuel surcharge dependent on further trends in the price of jet fuel on the spot markets.

On Short-haul/Continental (Intra-European and German-domestic) sectors:
+ 3 EUR for sales in countries where EUR is used as surcharge currency (Majority of the IATA-Europe, AF, NO & AP)
+ 3 USD for all other points of sale (excluding countries where prior government approvals are required)

I wonder what is the reasoning behind only increasing continental fuel surcharge. Did jet fuel used for intercontinental flights not get more expensive?

So what?

The increase is three Euro for sales in countries where EUR is used and three USD for all the rest of the world. The increase is zero in countries where prior government approvals are required. So the increse in the rest of the world will be two Euro only. The US website will get more customers.

It is just interesting that they are differentiating between the USD and EUR markets. What would have stopped them to charge 4.50 USD to the ROW? Didn't stop them before...

Here we go again... fuel surcharges go up by 5 EUR for longhaul, 4 EUR for shorthaul eff 14MAY:

At crude oil running above $125+ per barrel I would not be surprised to see the €99 deals vanish and reappear at €119 ...

When booking my one-way HAM-SXF flight yesterday the fare calculation was interesting already. About half of the $70 were the actualy fare and only about half the taxes and fees. Looks like the fuel surcharge is variable now depending on the type of ticket.

yes - for their very cheap offers they have a discounted fuel surcharge there was a thread some weeks ago where someone wondered why the taxes are higher on award tickets than on better fly tickets...
